Beyond the Hello!-style tidbits, the programme does a decent job of covering the issue at hand. It shows that homelessness comes in many forms, while suggesting ways in which it can be tackled. Over two episodes, the tone is upbeat and optimistic (and filled with modern buzzphrases – everyone talks about “lived experience”).

He seems to understand the fundamental issues and talk to charity workers and their clients on their own terms. And if he’s happier talking to the latter than actually serving them dinner or collecting their dirty plates as requested by Claudette Dawkins, who runs the canteen where he is filmed – well, I guess there’s only so much you can realistically expect from a king-in-waiting.

William is clearly committed to his cause, but he simply cannot galvanise his audience at the ballot box, in the workplace, and in the wider social arena to fix this inhumane problem once and for all. As an hour of factual television that was supposed to prove it is possible to end homelessness, this documentary was an abject failure.
