Not only does Netflix’s new 8-episode series pay homage to what came before with grace and understanding, but it also improves upon aspects of the book series with the aid of primary source-led historical context that enriches the story for a new generation.

With great performances, beautiful storytelling, and an unexpected sense of depth, Little House on the Prairie is a great addition to the Netflix catalog.

The result is an undeniably heartfelt family drama that, for all its coming-of-age anxieties and sweeping vistas, also dares to ask some difficult questions about the true price of progress.

Even though the production feels like a Hallmark movie with the lessons neatly delivered and the storylines tidily resolved, the series does make good work of centering women and minorities in a way that the original didn’t. Even if its depictions simplify and whitewash real prairie life, the covered wagon journey into the past is at least an appealingly wholesome ride.

A 2005 miniseries, shown as part of “The Wonderful World of Disney,” was generally faithful to the letter and spirit of the text. The record shows that I liked it. The new “Little House,” created by Rebecca Sonnenshine and streaming on Netflix, is fairly faithful to its spirit, and less so to its letter.

Its intentions are noble, but its execution is messy, with situations and dynamics resolved via the most even-handed and comforting solutions available—a process akin to smoothing out a tablecloth’s creases.

Stymied by the need to appeal to a family audience, this Little House is merely bland. .... You won’t be able to shake the feeling that this was made for an audience with modern – ie. short – attention spans and a desire for social media likes.

Cons: My first issue is that this series has 8 episode seasons. Now, I know almost all streaming shows have 8 episode seasons, but I will never shut up about how 8 episodes limits the quality of shows. The original Little House on the Prairie series felt like a real place and world and the characters felt like family because we got to spend so much time with them through their ups and downs which is something no 8 episode season show can ever accomplish. And while this show is excellent by modern standards, the original will remain the definitive version simply for having longer seasons. Quality over quantity isn’t a real thing with television. You need both working together for a show to work. That is what separates television from movies. Moving on, I would have liked this series to have had an actual intro. While this might be nitpicky, one of the iconic things about the original show was its moving intro. I would have liked this show to at least have made an attempt to have an intro that this show can be remembered by. I want there to be a song that I hear and instantly think of this world and characters. Despite the main Ingalls family being front and center for most of the show, there were some side plots. I love a good side plot, but I’m afraid that once again the season being so short really hurt the side plots like it does with almost all 8 episode shows. With so few episodes, I found myself desperate to rush through the side plots because I wanted to see more of the main Ingalls family drama. While some of the side plots piqued my interest at times, the show just could not allot enough screen time to fully flesh them out and execute them in an interesting way, which is something the original show had no problem with seeing as it had way more episodes and screentime to work with. Pros: As a diehard fan of the original Little House on the Prairie show with Melissa Gilbert, this show felt like its true spiritual successor. Am I mad that a streaming service got the rights to adapt the Little House books instead of a network channel? Obviously, because I am not a fan of the formula for streaming shows. But, for what it is, I’m not gonna lie. I enjoyed it. In fact, I am looking forward to season 2. It is honestly one of the best streaming shows I have ever watched in general, especially in this particular genre of a family friendly historical drama. The original Little House show means so much to me, and somehow this show managed to capture that magic in a bottle all over again. The casting, chef’s kiss to the casting. From Laura and Mary, to Mr. And Mrs. Ingalls, all the way to Mr. Edwards, everyone is perfectly cast, and sometimes even feel like the original show’s cast but in their own special ways. The cinematography is also incredible. While watching, you feel like you are out there on the prairie with them sometimes. This show is just so overall warm and fuzzy. The world needs more feel good shows like this with healthy family dynamics. Finally, I have to give a shout out to the dialogue. It also felt reminiscent of the original show. The dialogue in this show is just so wholesome, real, and human. It was a breath of fresh air compared to the cringey dialogue of most streaming shows.

It definitely leans into nostalgia, but due to some great performances (Laura Ingles was amazing), and solid production values, i thoroughly enjoyed thus reboot.
