Fit For TV: The Reality Of The Biggest Loser doesn’t reveal anything new to people who were fans of the reality competition series. But it definitely does a good job of showing exactly why it was popular and why it was a dangerous show for its contestants.

The result is a compelling if not overly deep expose on a series that has run its course, thankfully for the health and well being of all.

Perhaps fittingly, this documentary feels somewhat frantic in places – it’s as jittery and frenetic as a caffeine-fuelled workout. It would probably have benefited from fewer voices, a little more analysis and a clearer narrative through-line. However, the stories it tells are powerful enough to stick in the memory, as warnings from recent history.

Like the show it criticizes, it is an exercise in rubbernecking, capitalizing on the contestants’ anguish and suffering instead of offering healthy media analysis in hindsight as medicine.

Never a fan of the show, I found this documentary Illuminating, detailing the manipulations of the audience and the contestants. The odious trainers are even worse now, completely craven and despicable. The shows creators, although spinning their motivations and machinations as being positive, are disgusting.
