It's a very good season, with enough idiosyncrasy to triumph over some growing pains.

The character can be his own worst enemy at times, but he sure is fun to watch, and when you throw in the kind of pathos that a comparable show like Entourage never really had, it's a recipe for something special.

Dave is nothing if not a show for a very specific taste. It’s too smart to be labeled sophomoric, and while it’s packed with really great acting and a lot of heart, it’s also entirely common and accurate to use the word “weird” to describe it. But, like Dave himself, that’s part of its charm.

All three episodes feel like nothing else on TV right now, but they also speak to how often FX has allowed creative voices the freedom to express themselves in ways that feel deeply personal and ambitious.

An excellent (and severe) second season.

In the hands of someone less self-aware, a show like this could get really annoying, really fast. ... Bless Burd for allowing us to see him laid so bare, lacing juvenile dick jokes with an earnest strain of pathos.

In its promising first three episodes shared with critics, [Dave] shows there is still so much more left to explore.

In Season 3, “Dave” is basking in the confidence earned from its exceptional prior entry, but it’s not resting on its laurels.

Subversively endearing. ... “Dave” has to work a little harder to present a fuller story, and that effort is worth it.

While remaining properly, deeply funny throughout - Dave does feel like we are past the peak of manbaby comedy.
