Scaling back its most excessive parts has made “Dark Matter” one of the best science fiction series of the year.

The most mind-meltingly compelling genre series since Netflix’s Dark, and a twisty-turny triumph elevated by performances—led by Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly—that are as multi-layered as the various realities in which they exist.

I loved season 1 and I can't wait to see what's in store for this season. We'll see if it's really a 68 or it's a sci-fi 68, which usually means an 88. It's criminal that the first season got a 64. The book was great and the show did it justice, which we all now is hard to do with adaptations. Not only was it a good sci-fi thriller, but it really gave the relationships the gravitas they deserved and it resonated with the action.

Season 2 still brings a high budget sci-fi with much of the cast returning, and yet I feel the problem here is the more the writers try to define this universe and it's various maguffins, the less interesting it becomes. Still probably finish it though as I enjoy the cast and production quality.

While some of this might make your head hurt, it’s a good hurt. But it is essential to watch the first season before jumping into this one. .... It’s a series that’s so good, you might find yourselves wanting to watch it all over again.

A thoughtful, if unexpected continuation of the story, this second season takes a bold step into the unknown, delivering something different but altogether more satisfying.

Ultimately, Dark Matter season 2 does a lot right, including narrative consistency and providing representation. I can easily say the season is more good than bad. That said, the second season of Dark Matter remains a prime example of the issues that can arise when adaptations surpass their source material.

The result is a show with plenty of big ideas and big consequences but not enough small, human stakes to connect them. The performances keep pulling you back in, and the plot keeps shoving you out the door before you've had time to feel anything.

Not only has season 2 lost its spark, it also fails to justify its existence. The ingenuity of the original run can’t be replicated and, having gone beyond its source material, the plot meanders and struggles to push the (brilliant) initial premise much further.

Season 2 all of a sudden got extremely ghetto. WTF? Makes no sense in any reality.

It is not the same show anymore. It is all over the place. Terrible writing. Boring.
