This is a feudal drama akin to Braveheart or Wolf Hall, but set in the historic Hawaiian islands when they were a hotbed of conflict between warring kingdoms.

A decent show based on real history, with solid characters and great landscape. Native language helps to create an immersive feeling, action and romance seems there to deliver an engaging storyline, not to fill empty holes or drama agenda. The pacing may be uneven from time to time, but the final act is gripping as fudge and the series lives up to the hype.

Pas mal mais des séquences beaucoup trop longues où il ne se passe rien ; C'est juste filmer pour filmer ... Je comprends que le spectateur doit être imprégné de ce mode de vie dans les détails mais là c'est un peu trop à mon goût. Donc il manque d'action. Après nous retrouvons un Jason Momoah toujours aussi fort et qui incarne bien un chef de tribu, comme dans See. Il est intéressant de connaitre, par cette série, l'histoire de ces iles à cette époque bien entendu.

Jason Momoa co-created and stars in this epic tale of the unification of the Hawaiian Islands. He plays that titular character, as he works his way thru some violent encounters and too many long scenes of political maneuvering. It reminded me of the Hulu series “Shogun,” in that the visuals are beautiful and the action is impressive, but the long sequences of tribal meetings kept dragging things down. The scenery is gorgeous (ironically, shot 80% in New Zealand due to tax credits) and there’s a rich tapestry of the indigenous culture. The performances are earnest, even in the native languages. It’s the battles that stand out, esp. the final encounter, which was directed by Momoa. It’s grand, eloquent and the kills are fast, furious and plentiful. As with so many series, this could have benefited from editing, including less chatter and more action. It ended with an obvious setup for a 2nd season, which hasn’t been officially announced.

This was just everything I wanted from this and more. Sure, it had its good and not so good episodes. But overall it was just so cool. I wish I knew more about the symbolisme of outfits and tattoos. It made me want to learn more about the history and I can't remember the last time a show did that. Epic finale too.

Ok just has to add if you are comfortable with subs, the real language when it is about that culture and country is amazing (like shogun) I cant stand general foreign films with subs but this is so authentic, acting is great.

Brilliant writing, actors are representing so amazing in this movie and encapsulate the true spirit of the roles they lead. Such a powerful and beautiful and heartbreaking story. Great action, great to learn the beautiful language of the Hawaiian people. I am PRAYING there's a season 2 in the works Bravo!!

A good story. I think it is historically accurate. The acting is good. It's brutal as one would expect. The story moves along. There is typical human lust and depredations involved, with outside random influences. Again, a good story. One has to pay attention since most of the episodes have English subtitles. Our view is: "get some popcorn, get comfortable, and enjoy the show."

Absolutely amazing! Chief of War had me hooked from start to finish – I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I’m already counting down the days until the next episode is released. The storytelling is captivating, and the way it highlights the culture is both powerful and deeply engaging.Every episode so far has kept me completely invested, and the cast does an outstanding job bringing the story to life. Incredible performances all around. I highly recommend watching – you won’t be disappointed!

Watched the free S1E1 episode. Just as expected tribal blood lust with almost no blood, same goes for the story.

Chief of War is literally everything I expected from it. It's a Jason Mamoa showcase (not a bad thing, though I'm cheeked-out already after 2 episodes) and a Pacific Islander epic. It has all the hallmarks of any heroes journey with the added bonus of amazing production values and good acting. I was also relieved this has not yet turned into a political message about colonization etc. ... yet. It reminds me of Rapa Nui (again, not a bad thing). The only thing I find slightly tedious is that it's in Hawaiian or whatever Pacific Islander language the setting demands. That's a noble addition to this epic, but it can be hard to listen to and reading subtitles distracts from the amazing visuals. No offense to the language/culture and kudos for going down that path... it couldn't have been easy, but I think some plot device to move into English would have served the show better. Having said that, I didn't see that as an issue in Shogun, which COW also reminds me of.
