Chad is so cringe worthy! He’s a melodramatic 9th grader who is trying too hard to be popular. He publicly melts down when his schemes fall apart making him his own worst ****’s like watching a young Michael Scott (from The Office) but more sad and harder to watch. At times he’s hilarious and has some great one-liners so I watched all episodes this season and will probably watch next season if it’s renewed.

Because Pedrad is playing this character, with such affection and physical dedication, the show works. She nails the antsy tugging of a backpack strap while talking to a new classmate, or the brittle posture walking through the halls, or the brief stolen moments in a bathroom, wiping away tears before throwing yourself back out there.

“Chad” is sure to gain a cult following but it’s too niche to steal the thunder of the grand poobah of uncomfortable comedy, “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

While the show features some sporadic moments of genuine growth and connection, Chad himself mostly operates in extremes. That his most defining characteristic throughout the first season’s eight episodes is “insecure” can make him hard to watch. ... Should “Chad” get a second season, it would be more interesting to see what he does with even an ounce more confidence, even if it doesn’t make for as many obvious punchlines.

This season and this whole series in general is an utter crap fest! I couldn't even make it through the first episode as to how bad this sitcom is!! The main character is an unlikable loathsome little brat. The jokes are stupid, and the plots are contrived! Skip this show at every cost!!

The unsolvable problem is that Pedrad plays Chad without an ounce of believability or empathy. Chad is the weird, extreme character in an SNL sketch, except that this is a full series and we can't just cut away permanently when Chad does something so extreme that it makes it impossible for the narrative to continue believably or for other characters to react in a grounded way. If you ever wondered why sketches are never long than 5 minutes, watch Chad.
