Until Dawn

Until Dawn is a gleeful reimaging of the classic slasher film, modifying the tropes enough to turn the familiar into something fresh.

Caught between “Cabin in the Woods” and the mystifying “Serenity,” Until Dawn makes countless gestures at being an incisive horror comedy — some good, some bad — but works better approached as a full-blown spoof. If that was the intent here, a better name might have been something like “Video Game: The Horror Movie” (or maybe “Horror Movie: The Video Game: The Horror Movie?”)

For maybe half its 103-minute running time, maybe even a little more, Until Dawn gets by on its spookhouse variety and surprising humor.

Overall, the film will please horror buffs, but casual fans or game purists should look elsewhere.

Until Dawn wants to carve its own path, separate from its source material. Ironically, in trying to be different, it ends up feeling more clichéd than ever.

The terrible script so often steals the spotlight that the gory, by-the-numbers filmmaking putting it into action is almost besides the point. Sandberg, for his part, can stage an effective horror sequence.

An insulting parade of tedium.

I loved the movie!... I wasn't expecting anything at all! But I was surprised by what I saw! Very cliché, but fun, bloody and disgusting. Well, I've never played the game, but after seeing some information about the PS game, I realized that it might not please some audiences, because the movie only has a few references to the Game and this might disappoint some audiences. Some noticed it from the trailer.

David F. Sandberg drew heavily on every trope of the horror genre for his video game adaptation, resulting in numerous cinematic references (Blair Witch, Evil Dead, Halloween, etc.). The film apparently only works because it's constantly peppered with dramatic horror elements. These include rooms with no lights, dark cellar staircases, bear traps, underground passages, monsters, and floating people. The film can't function without these elements, as the story itself doesn't contribute much to the horror. What remains is a repetitive, bloody massacre that, as the film progresses, leads to unnecessary pacing and has little to do with genuine "eerie terror." Therefore, I wouldn't classify it as a horror film. However, there are certainly fans who expect exactly this kind of thing from a horror movie. On the plus side, Sandberg, the excellent cast, and the well-crafted set design are all commendable.

It’s disappointing that this film is “Until Dawn” in name only and doesn’t truly adapt the game. However, the time loop element is intriguing, and I did enjoy the group’s camaraderie.Unfortunately, the horror is generic and uninspired, and the visuals are equally dull, marked by flat cinematography. Overall, it’s a shallow film that delivers a lackluster execution of what could have been an interesting concept.
