"Mrs Doubtfire" before "Mrs Doubtfire", but actually not... Both "Mrs Doubtfire" & "Tootsie" are both about men going in drag, yet their stories are different. The plot about a the man, Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman), who is done dirty by the industry, the way he can get back is becoming a woman (slightly alter ego) named Dorothy or such. I love how the plot is a promising one, never a ripoff. At first, I thought the comedic relief was the script that he had, because it contained some hilarious quotes, which Michael Dorsey shouted out at the start. I also just want to highlight some iconic moments about the argument he got into with the lady in his apartment when going through his drag phase & calling HIMself a LESBIAN (this will stick out). Then again, I will love this movie for giving the message of learning, honesty & showing the true self, which is all you want to be.

Dustin Hoffman's performance is masterful, and the costume and makeup design almost break free from the constraints of the uncanny valley. While some aspects of the characters' emotional arcs venture into unsettling territory, Tootsie remains a well-paced, frequently funny, high-concept comedy.

GOAT tier voice work and acting from Dustin Hoffman, a fun movie in general.

This film goes well above and beyond its drag queen premise. It has a reason to be this way, it has a reason to tell a blossoming love story, and it has a reason to make some gender societal commentaries. The direction work and cast chemistry are stellar.

Quelle tristesse...

Unmask The Voice. Tootsie Pollack has got his finest project out. A perfect balance of humor and comedy. Both illuminating and inspiring. Probably because it judges its own host, the protagonist, in the most subtle mature way possible. There is this one line that is enacted in its first stage by the protagonist, and then later that very same line by the antagonist. This is how balanced the world is. The director Sydney Pollack's romance between the characters is his sharpest knife. He cuts deep with supporting characters, like when Hoffmann when dressed as a woman is forced just after he is being proposed by being sung in front of his apartment. That scene that may draw in the laughs is so beautifully haunting as the kraken is released in that very stage after being teased in the entire film. And these subtle nuances where some director keeps inappropriately touching and controlling his lead actress, is done so brilliantly that without any such loud intentions, he fights for equal rights like no one. If Dustin Hoffman through his body language attracts you heavily with his performance, Jessica Lange in her completely opposite cloak oozes warmth and somehow the film has managed to be balanced again. This brilliant never-taken-for-granted concept is buoyant as far as the gags are concerned, after a certain while, this transformation of Hoffmann is considered to be the apparatus of the scene that is actually set in a backdrop of something beyond valuable than it. The supporting cast like hilarious Bill Murray, incredibly moving Charles Durning and brilliant George Gaynes have definitely helped in creating this ultimate illusion. Just like the pleased people of the soap opera viewers, Tootsie- if I may call her that- deserves the fame and respect she and he gets.

Top of the mountain roles of young Dustin Hoffman. The resource of drag-comedy works as fine, with smart humor and remarkable make-up job. An ultimate of 80s that everyone shall to see.

I'm not a fan of the crossdressing thing. Dustin Hoffman is good and the film has its funny moments but the story is somewhat generic

Charming and with a lot to say, Sydney Pollack's "Tootsie" marks a high point in the careers of Dustin Hoffman, Jessica Lange, and everyone else involved.

Tootsie is one of Dustin Hoffman's best movies. The movie also has one of the best stories for a movie I know of. Sydney Pollack's best film, and I kind of think it should have won best picture, instead of just being nominated.

The synopsis of Sydney Pollack’s drag comedy TOOTSIE can be construed as follows: a struggling thespian/acting coach Michael Dorsey (Huffman) cross-dresses as a woman Dorothy Michaels to secure a role in a popular daytime soapie, and scoops up massive acclamation as a single, middle-aged role model who disseminate fresh air of women being independent and self-confident, which profoundly inspires her fellow actress Julie (Lange), whom Michael has a huge crush on. If one has yet watched the film, the synopsis might get on someone’s nerves, how on earth a man at the end of his tether can so easily thrive in the same line of business as soon as he acts in the opposite sex? What is more, he even becomes some sort of the guiding light to the dismissive gender while sporting a hard-on under his dress, it could only be a straight guy’s pipe-dream with a penchant for sexism and male chauvinism, the movie could have been a total train wreck under a lesser brain. keep reading my review on my blog, google: cinema omnivore, thanks

Of Dustin Hoffman's many brilliant performances, this will always be my favorite. He allows us to genuinely care for this person--regardless of what he has done. His wit and comedy are to die for. Oh, and don't forget the early genius of Jessica Lange.

I had low expectations for this one and, honestly, expected the cross dressing of Hoffman to be a ****. However, as a whole, the film is very funny, endearing, and quite charming, as we watch Hoffman transform into a woman in order to try to rescue his acting career. Easily the funniest part of the film is watching serious scenes with serious implications unfold with the knowledge that Hoffman is actually a man and being the only ones aside from his roommate (Bill Murray) who knows this. In addition, him working on his interpersonal relationships from both sides really leads to some interesting conversations that also help to add to the comedy of the film. In terms of acting, really everyone did well and aside from Hoffman who obviously stood out, Bill Murray was great. He was his usual self from the 80's, which really made every scene he was in quite funny. Overall, Tootsie is a fun film to watch (there are some awkward moments that make you cringe, but those aside) and is a solid way to spend an afternoon.

Like many other cross-dressing roles, Dustin Hoffman's "Tootsie" steals the show. Pollack's movie delivers solid laughs as well as being a great story. It might not have beaten Gandhi in the 1982 Oscars, but I would say it's at least a good runner up.

With a terrific performance by Hoffman and the movie's great comedic style, plus a heartwarming storyline, Tootsie hits a home run. In my opinion, also better than Ghandi.
