SummaryIn Tokyo!, three of the world's greatest filmmakers come together for an omnibus triptych examining the nature of one unforgettable city as it's shaped by the disparate people who live, work (and even run amok!) inside one enormous, constantly evolving, densely populated Japanese megalopolis - the ravishing and inimitable Tokyo. Triptych, rhapsod... Read More

Perhaps it is inevitable as three foreign directors train their lenses on that unique island culture of the East that all three are propelled by fantasy or science fiction, and suggest more alienation from Tokyo than affection for the great city.

Carax, who hadn't made a movie since "Pola X" in 1999 comes off best.

Both in its parts and in the sum of them Tokyo! is playfully and sometimes disorientingly apocalyptic.

Falling somewhere between the horrors of Three … Extremes and the beauties of Eros, this triptych of short films set in and underscored by the titular megalopolis is a gorgeous, sprawling mess.

Do these films reflect actual aspects of modern Tokyo? The hikikomori epidemic is apparently real enough, but the other two segments seem more deliberately fantastical. The entertainment value? Medium to high: "Merde." Tokyo? Still standing.

An uneven but enjoyable trio of films that take affectionate (and sometimes literal) aim at the Japanese capital.

The best, Shaking Tokyo, stars the versatile Teruyuki Kagawa.

A Cinematic Triptych of the Cruel, Foolish, and Lonely Metropolis250402 (3.4)Living in a cruel, foolish, and lonely metropolis, we all long for our utility, our meaning, and our hearts to reach someone else. Tokyo! is a fascinating collaborative project by three visionary directors: Michel Gondry, Leos Carax, and Bong Joon-ho. Personally, I found Gondry's opening segment to be the most resonant, though opinions seem to vary. In "Interior Design," we see the struggle of Hiroko and her boyfriend Akira, who move to Tokyo with nothing but dreams. Akira defines himself through his "art"—a bizarre film about mutants—but Hiroko, lacking a clear "vocation," finds herself becoming invisible in a city that discards anyone who cannot prove their worth. Her physical transformation into a wooden chair is a heartbreakingly literal metaphor for finding value in simply being something someone else can lean **** second segment, "Merde," introduces us to a "Creature of the Sewers" who decorates his lair with Rising Sun flags and terrorizes the city with grenades. It's a provocative critique of xenophobia and historical guilt, where the monster claims to be the son of the very people who **** his saintly mother. The trial scenes highlight the hypocrisy of a crowd that hates the "other" while ignoring their own history of discrimination. Finally, Bong Joon-ho’s "Shaking Tokyo" explores the life of a hikikomori who hasn't left his house in a decade. His obsession with order and his refusal to make eye contact with the world are **** by a delivery girl whose body is covered in "button" tattoos. When Tokyo becomes a city of shut-ins, he must choose to press the "love" button and step outside. The film captures the exhaustion of urban life—the feeling that even when we hide, the earth still shakes beneath us. It’s a beautifully strange exploration of human connection in a place designed to keep us apart.
