The French have a knack for it. They've been making funny and agreeable movie farces for forever, and seeing The Women on the 6th Floor makes you hope they'll never stop.

Fabrice Luchini is one of the delights of world cinema, and in The Women on the 6th Floor he finds a role ideally suited to his odd mix of fussiness and sensitivity.

Lighter than a meringue and as insubstantial, the French boulevard comedy The Women on the 6th Floor was designed for the gentle laughter it easily earns.

Still, this is one French comedy that could have used a little more hand wringing and a little less whimsy.

Has a few things going for it -- a winning performance by Luchini and a small role by Pedro Almodóvar favorite Carmen Maura. But these talented folks can't compensate for a plot that strains credulity and lacks badly needed social bite. Wait for the DVD.

Philippe Le Guay's carefully-tailored crowd-pleaser does have its pleasures, even if originality is not among them.

The Women on the 6th Floor is delicate and sensitive and utter bollocks - a bourgeois wet dream made to soothe the souls and stir the loins of powerful men in midlife crisis. But some of us wish we could see this movie told from the maids' point of view.

I've read a lot of really harsh reviews on this one, mostly saying that the movie fails to depict the historical frame of '60s Paris but in my opinion they are missing an important thing: this movie feels far more of a comedy rather than drama (you could say french styled comedy) and adding all the sadness that Franco's dictatorship brought to Spain, the hard condition of laborers and so on, would have changed the bitter-sweetness of this movie into disappointing sadness. That said, the plot is pretty straight forward and totally enjoyable and this movie purposely steers away from any kind of political or ethical judgement about anything. Again, a very light french styled comedy that claims to be nothing more than that, totally worth watching.
