The Vourdalak

The Vourdalak is an indication of where modern horror movies should be headed. I was moved not by the gruesome violence of the story but by the devastating tragedy akin to a Greek drama. The Vourdalak doesn't need graphic cruelty to get its point across, as the movie and filmmaker understand that there is even more devastation to be found in the dark.

A delirious and oddly agreeable stopover.

There is much that could easily lose some people when they behold elements of its grand design, but for those willing to get on its wavelength, you’re in for a treat as beautiful to look at as it is unexpectedly haunting.

Everything about the film manages to be forward-thinking and old-school at the same time, giving the genre a bite in the neck it might not have wanted but certainly needed.

A proudly old-fashioned Gothic fable with grain and grit, the delectable “Vourdalak” is swift to announce in its early moments that we are in the hands of a skillful stylist.

Surrender to its vintage vibe and its emotional kick may surprise you.

Tolstoy's cousin wrote the novella about this vampire more than 50 years before Bram Stoker's Dracula. It follows a French marquis who ends up stranded in a remote country where he meets a peculiar family. Turns out that dad is the ****. This is not a typical horror film, but much more an atmospheric mood piece. Even if there were any potential thrills, they are undermined by the use of a life size marionette for the father, which writer/director Adrien Beau personally operates and voices. Its weirdness simply takes the film out of "reality" into the world of stylized cinema with a touch of dark romanticism.
