L.A. Weekly
Special effects master Tom Savini did the makeup for this overlooked gem (actually, his fingerprints are on a few of the films on this list), and some of the kills are downright ugly (or beautiful, in horror jargon).

Slant Magazine
What the film lacks in narrative drive, coherence, and performance, it makes up with thoughtful lighting, strong cinematography from Raoul Lomas and an uncredited João Fernandes, and, of course, Savini’s lovingly overblown and impossible splatter effects.

Slasher muito foda dos anos 80, é um dos meus favoritos, adoro o visual do assassino, as mortes e os efeitos do Tom Savini, ele é bem daora pra quem é super fã do subgênero como eu.

This is probably one of the better slashers of the eighties. All of the elements are there: plenty of people getting killed off in bloody gory ways, a masked killer, a twist (that I found predictable but I didn’t mind) and some nudity. This slasher is slightly different as it is set at the end of the Second World War. The outfit that the killer wears looks pretty cool. Not the goriest or the most suspenseful but better than most of the era.

For all its boldness of concept and carnage, The Prowler is never entirely satisfying. There are too many missed opportunities to transcend the genre’s schlock, too many passages where nothing happens, too many scares that fall flat. Still, it’s an intriguing artifact of an earlier horror-movie era, one that toys with the idea of villains and victims while slashing the slasher formula to bits.

Time Out
Mad axeman action yet again, cravenly conformist in every department.

The real reason for the existence of this unexceptional film is to show off the artistry of special-effects man Savini.

The best part of the film is the kills by far, but other than that, this film is kinda slow and boring.

You don't need a chainsaw to have a massacre. (1984 re-release as "Pitchfork Massacre")
