The One That Got Away

A suspenseful, near-forgotten gem about a captured loyal Luftwaffe pilot, Franz Von Werra (Hardy Kruger), who is obsessed with escape. [05 Jun 1994, p.F1]

Under veteran helmer Roy Ward Baker's solid direction, Kruger makes a surprisingly sympathetic "enemy" protagonist, and one can't help but root for the brave and determined young German in his escape attempt.

If not a milestone, The One That Got Away adds up to a consistently good tingler.

It all takes place before America's entry into the Second World War, and the three bids for freedom (the last from a prison train in Canada) are well handled. In his first English-speaking movie Kruger is impressive, though somewhat enigmatic. [26 Feb 2006, p.22]

Worth noting that the film was regarded as piquant rather than as offensive; it's still worth watching, despite too many scenes of Krüger lurching across muddy fields and frozen rivers.
