Amazing film with great cinematography, acting, and creative approach. From the camera shot, lighting, and background set that contributes to the chaotic approach of the film. The fantastic acting from Robert Pattinson and, most notably, Willem Dafoe manages to immerse you into the film's atmosphere. The aspect ratio and black and white color give you the familiar yet bizarre feeling. With that aside, I will be honest and say I did not understand the film. The film reminds me of a Malaysian movie I watched called Interchange. That film tries to be different and tells you that it's different, but not this film. This film doesn't tell you; it shows you with the chaotic environment and struggle. The film has a lot happening from the mixed mind, gaslighting, desire, becoming lost, and escape. Even though it doesn't make sense, I like to think that Willem Dafoe is the one who is gaslighting him and making him turn insane. Overall, a beautiful film; some shots remind me of a Wes Anderson film. A great watch, I guess.

In the late nineteenth century, Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson are stranded on a secluded lighthouse island. Their shift is scheduled for four weeks, but then ugly weather intervenes and patience runs thin. As do inhibitions, wits, stories and supplies of alcohol. While they’re fairly well-behaved for their scheduled stay, the drinking gets out of control during the pair’s interminable wait for relief. That leads to arguments, fights, songs, speeches, twisted hallucinations and a general sense of unsteady mania. Imagine Eraserhead were penned by Herman Melville. Writer/director Robert Eggers uses every tool in his box to emphasize the tandem’s turmoil and loss of reason amidst trying circumstances. His choice of an extremely narrow, boxy aspect ratio makes the screen feel crowded and claustrophobic. Sharp, high-contrast photography matches the actors' dark demeanor and allows the fabulous camerawork and visual artistry to sweep us away. Intense moods and thick, liquor-bleached hallucinations pepper the narrative, bending reality until it’s almost indistinguishable from delusion. If you look deeply enough, or know the stories well enough, you’ll find a wealth of mythological references to reinforce The Lighthouse’s messaging. It’s a complex work, a deep one, that takes no half-measures. At times, it can be intimidating, dominating, smothering, but that’s kind of the point. The guys up on the screen are feeling the same way and reacting in kind. With the assistance of some seriously mood-altering intoxicants. Dafoe crushes his role as a ranting, raving, whip-cracking old graybeard, while Pattinson meets him in the middle as the rankled apprentice whose will is tested and ultimately loses his grip on reality. They're both excellent performances, rousing portrayals of lunatics at the end of their ropes, but Dafoe is downright magnetic. I dare you to tear your eyes away from his harrowing, unblinking two-minute monologue, the impetus of a wild, violent climax. The pair’s thick accents, uncertain language and slurred speech may render some dialogue unintelligible, but we get enough hints from their expressions and body language to figure it out for ourselves. Not like they’re talking a lot of sense by that point anyway. A tough watch, a rich watch, an enlightening watch, and not a watch I’m in a great hurry to repeat.

The gradual madness is shown very well, due to loneliness, guilt and the unjustified power of one over another. It's a good film and it's good that it's in black and white because there are many disgusting moments.

That's a film that I liked. I didn't really understand it, but honestly this usually makes films better for me. Loved its climate, black and white 4:3, and especially it being a psychological horror sea **** you liked this film I strongly recommend reading ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge from 1798 as they both share this kind of DNA of exploring guilt and madness.

The Lighthouse is a well-made film, but not one I enjoyed to watch. The characters are layered and through their interactions and story do we get to know who they really are. But after some reveals everything gets f*cked up and I expected it, because this film is famous for that, but I did not enjoy it. At 18 I'm probably not ready for movies like this where all characters are f*cked up. I need someone I can root and be nervous for. On the other hand I know that everything is well-written, but at this point I can't objectively rate this film, since I didn't enjoy watching it. The eerie tone is constant and the cinematography is beautiful. It has relatively minor camera movement and with the black and white it gives a vintage look. The editing is gorgeous and the pacing is slow, which works well with the tone and cinematography, but it also makes the movie boring for me. The production design is great, while the acting performances are phenomenal. The Lighthouse is a movie I hope I'll enjoy more later in life.

A movie that could give a masterclass on filmmaking. Shots, composition, lighting. Everything is perfect. Masterful acting. The plot slowly loses itself. It's a movie about going insane.

The Lighthouse (2019) was a **** EXPERIENCE! Outstanding performances by Willem Dafoe & Robert Pattinson, some of the best framing and cinematography out there, a trippy story/nightmare, great and scary as hell atmosphere, sound design, and lighting, and a score that sends ****. The dialogue delivery is outstanding and breathtaking, and the editing is so well done and seamless. There are so many long scenes of talking, and I'll be like, **** it cut or what? I was so into it and entertained, and **** into the nightmare. PSS...wardrobe, makeup, the effects team, and location scouts OUTDID themselves!!

Come on!! How is it possible that this movies is highly rated? Nonsense, lousy plot, disgusting. I truly disliked this picture as I never disliked something for a long time. Waste of time.

Extremely unconventional and original. The first of Eggers's films I have seen, safe to say it won't be the last. In 'The Lighthouse' the audience tracks the work of two lighthouse keepers who struggle to maintain their sanity together while working on a tiny isolated island. The cinematography plays such a strong role in the horror of the movie. Which I really liked. It's black and white yes, but it's grey more than anything. And when trapped alone on an island, that is daunting. The writing was also ingenious. There are mythology-ridden prayers that Dafoe's character recites that make you pause and wonder "Did Eggers read that somewhere or write it himself?" I thought it could have been scarier, he takes many occasions to take the film to more of a dramatic place than a terrifying one, but still great nevertheless. "Why did ye spill yer beans, Tommy?"

The Lighthouse has that attractive cinematography as it’s a stunning film but the maroon of The Lighthouse certainly plays a lot of mind tricks that are the darkest I have ever seen in a film.

One of those experiences where each succeeding moment slowly dropped my jaw more and more, until the damn thing started to lock in place. A24 seems to be the home of middington, yet overrated directors. Premise and beginnings are foreboding, however the screenplay is far too wordy & the direction suffers, there's simply no room for suspense or even exposition. Creatively the premise is stunted art for arts sake; it drifts aimlessly in political and ahistorical limbo and has no greater meaning. Thus, is filler in much the same way grindhouse was drivethru filler due to the lack of investment in Hollywood, during the 70's (the big TV push).

Интересный такой фильм в чернобелый стилистики, так как фильм основам на реальный событиях, с легка додуманных может быть, знаю только что происходило давно в 1801г, а в фильме выбран период с 1836 до 1912, но все таки примерно 1880-1900г, так как вроде выглядят более менее современно и вспомнили про королеву) Смотрю и думаю это ему кажется или на самом деле, что то странно происходит, даже если опустить русалку, разговаривают очень странно, перепады настроения старого, а молодой вообще терпел терпел и терпение кончилось. Я бы сказал фильм по настроению, у мены было такое нестандартное состояние решил глянуть не стандартный фильм, неплохо.

Horror is probably the wrong description for this film. But it is very creepy. The film alternates between funny, humiliating, dangerous and creepy scenes. According to the internet, the movie deals with some mythology themes, which honestly no one who hasn't studied this subject understands. That's why the ending leaves a dissatisfied feeling.

One of the greatest films ever made in my opinion. Dafoe's performance here is one of the best performances of all time.

That's what you call cinema. It's not a movie for all because it's not very fast and it's all about the growing madness of two man on a isolated rock. Defoe and Pattinson deserved BOTH an oscar, such an incredible performance in one of the most representative movie of madness and depravity of man.

Another proof that 2019 was one of the greatest years of film since 1994. Maybe THE greatest. With films like Joker, Parasite, Knives Out, The Irishman or The Lighthouse, 2019 was the most satisfying year to watch a film of our generation. The Lighthouse is a straight-up psycho-thriller (while also being literally the best horror of the century), with two actual human characters (one is performed by the great Robert Pattinson and the other is the even greater Willem Dafoe), fantastic cinematography, a haunting atmosphere, and these things will make you either love or hate this film. But it will definitely be memorable. It has many already iconic scenes (imo), while it explores the darkest parts of madness and insanity. Recommended. 8/10

Robert Eggers' follow up to his masterful The Witch is an equally compelling achievement. Wickedly funny and gorgeously shot, it features two top caliber performances from Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe as they slowly descend into madness through claustrophobic isolation.

The Lighthouse was an ok movie overall for me, Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe performance was absolutely nuts not only in the good way but in the incredible way, they we're fantastic, the visual look of the film was beautiful, the black and white color was a perfect decision, but sadly they don't have the right main story, for me the story was just uninterested and mostly boring, and if it's not because of countless of great scene that really kinda cover the main story, i will give the movie a lower score, at in the end, The Lighthouse nailed pretty much everything except the story.

What should I say about this movie? Eggers confirms to be one of the greatest directors alive, this movie has a directing and cinematography that reminds Lovecraft, Bergman, Tarkovsky and in general the old European nord directors and it's a great movie that alternates thrilling/horror moments with dark humour ones. This movie is not as perfect as "The Witch" was and I still prefer Egger's previous work over this one probabily because this movie is maybe a little bit derivative (he reminds me an old french movie called "Gardiens de Phare"). Anyway the level here is extremely high again and every scene is simply visually as beautiful as it gets. Dafoe and Pattinson here just provides master of acting. If "The Witch" was a masterpiece, this one is not but it's a great movie, one of those movies you don't see anymore today.

This is one of the worst movies ever seen! It didn't make much sense most of the time. There was no story line. It was well acted, but we had to watch it in two sessions because we got bored. We had to watch it to the end just to see if we could make sense of it.

This movie stands out for being different but it feels as though the writer/director was so focused upon it being different that he neglected to make it a coherent story. Rather than truth being peeled open as the movie progresses, further layers of ambiguity are added. This leads to a rather unsatisfactory ending. It still gets a 7 for the strong nautical vibe and how uneasy it made me feel, which I much prefer to the boredom I have been left to deal with watching other mainstream movies of late, but don't watch this if you are easily disgusted!

I liked aspects of his previous film, "The Witch," but I found the third act underwhelming. "The Lighthouse" is a vast improvement - and a great example of how to get a horror movie right. Willem Dafoe, who's always good, does an amazing job. Having been familiar with Robert Pattinson only from his unremarkable turn as Edward Cullen, I was pleasantly surprised by his intense but complicated performance. The music, sound design, and visuals of "The Lighthouse" are captivating. However I found a few scenes poorly lit, and Willem Dafoe's dialogue is difficult to understand due to the thickness of his sailor dialect. But despite a few problems here and there, "The Lighthouse" is a powerful tale of insanity and isolation.

The cinematography was great in that it made you feel claustrophobic and like you were spiraling into madness along with the main characters. The acting was superb. That being said, this movie was hard to enjoy and follow at times. I like a more straightforward movie, but can appreciate the nuances of the Lighthouse. Worth checking out.

A great aesthetic coupled with excellent acting in this two-man character study. So, why the B+ review? The plot is pretty simple and places you in a series of disjoint vignettes that are weird for weirdness's sake. Yes, its a great reflection on the mindset of the characters, but do we really need that scrimshaw scene(you'll know what I mean)? Does that really add to the movie? I'm glad they took risks in making something different, but there is some room for polish.

This movie managed to leave me bored and disgusted at the same time. Corporeal fluid and gases abound, and don't seem to serve any other purpose than to delve into sordid territory. As for the story, for me it utterly fails to convey any higher meaning. It's not a journey into madness, not a supernatural thriller, I would be hard pressed to say what it *is*. More than anything, it seemed like a jumbled mess of discomforting moments, so much so that I just couldn't wait to see the end titles roll. But does it go anywhere? Nope.

In my opinion, this is the best 2019 horror movie i've seen, and honestly, it is one of my favorite horror movies of all time, all of it is very interesting and amazing. From Dafoe's and Pattinson's acting, to the amazing montage and scenography. It's really disturbing, yet interesting at the same time.

I went into this not knowing much about it, but suspected it would be decent based on what I've heard from people whose opinions I admire. But it took me through an experience I wasn't prepared for, and certainly one I wasn't expecting. Aesthetically it's stunning, some of the visuals alone are iconic and breathtaking, the acting is elevated to the highest highs. Both Defoe and Pattinson give chilling performances. The story - oh boy. The best I could say is the lest you know the better. But go in with an open mind, because this will be weird, uneasy, at times uncomfortable, unnerving, and in brief moments even funny.

Absolutely fantastic, Robert Pattinson's acting was spot on. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole movie. The movie was full of suspense, mystery and most of all thrill. Definitely recommend it to all.
