The Last Tycoon doesn't really build to any climax. We follow it horizontally, as if it were a landscape being surveyed by a camera in a long pan-shot.

Producer Sam Spiegel's contribution is admirable, but Elia Kazan's direction of the Pinter plot seems unfocussed though craftsmanlike. Robert De Niro's performance as the inscrutable boy-wonder of films is mildly intriguing.

DeNiro hits a homerun as studio head, quasi based on Irving Thalberg, Movie works best showing the behind the scenes of movie making in the Golden Age of Hollywood, Sadly the look and design of the movie comes across as cheap TV movie quality, Film goes further downhill with an overlong doomed romance subplot with a scatterbrained boring girl, DeNiros first date with her goes on and on for half an hour, Film should've focused more on Theresa Russell ------ she is so much sexier, charistmatic, and fun. Movie gets better and quite poignant when DeNiro gets kicked out of the studio. Jack Nicholson has an effective cameo as commie,
