A biopic about an exceptional talent and her unusual story of a woman who, despite all the obstacles in a male-dominated sport, not only asserts herself but pushes the boundaries. The story is very well told and encompasses everything that defines a biography: highs, lows, doubts, struggle, the question of when one has achieved everything and what comes next. The film is gripping, sensitive, and exciting.

This could have been a "Rocky/Creed for women", and I'm so glad it was not. This is a real life story, and it feels like one on every front. CONTINUE READING ON LETTERBOXD: ****/8fctad

Claressa "T-Rex" Shields is the first woman in the US to win an Olympic gold for boxing. She rose from a struggling, unhappy family in Flint, Michigan to winning the medal at 17. That's the first half of this movie. After her win, she can't get any endorsements and her life remains a challenge. Ryan Destiny plays the role with steely determination. Brian Tyree Henry holds her life and the movie together in his role as her determined coach. Barry Jenkins (director of "Moonlight" & "Mufasa: The Lion King") has penned a script that emphasizes the emotional angles of this story. In her directing debut, Rachael Morrison (cinematophapher for "Black Panther" and "Fruitvale Station) has kept the trajectory on course with solid visual and expressive choices. The fight scenes are fast, well-choreographed and short. This film goes beyond the typical sports story to examine the effects success can have after the big win. It's told with solid skill.

"The Fire Inside" is an excellent movie about commitment, strength and honor for the sport you love. Renowned cinematographer Rachel Morrison makes her feature directorial debut with this film about boxer Claressa Shields’ true-life ascent to the Olympics in this unique sports story that goes beyond the triumph of the underdog to ask what comes after. Young Claressa Shields (Ryan Destiny) sneaks into a boxing gym, eager to spar with the boys. Local volunteer coach Jason Crutchfield (Brian Tyree Henry) quickly takes her under his wing. Claressa proves fiercely talented but soon Crutchfield must go beyond the duties of a coach to keep her on track as she starts to feel not just the pressure of winning, but also the glare of her beleaguered hometown of Flint, Michigan seeking hope in her resilience. Destiny gives a stunning performance as Shields, weaving between grounded and intense as she tries to shake off her precarious reality. You’re quickly rooting for Claressa’s ascent to the Olympics but also forced to confront the crushing disappointment when things don’t turn out. All the while, Henry keeps us in the fight with a performance that finds warmth and patience amid the frustrations. "The Fire Inside" marks Rachel Morrison’s stunning feature directorial debut as she uses her multifaceted experience as cinematographer on films big and small (Fruitvale Station, Mudbound and Black Panther) to capture both the intimate moments of Claressa’s life and her extraordinary matchups in the ring. Written and produced by Barry Jenkins, this film is a journey that takes us through the usual triumphs of the underdog and to what comes after. Where countless sports stories find their end, Claressa’s begins.
