It's what I like most about him. Sacha Baron Cohen is probably too recognizable to get away with the unscripted voyeurism that once fueled his characters on Da Ali G Show, which is a pity because those provided the fodder for most of his biggest laughs. He gets by okay in The Dictator, his first starring vehicle without such scenes, but also feels more homogenized and common than ever before. This is an intentionally crass, stupid film that leaves no culture un-mocked and no softball un-smacked. Not to say it isn't funny, because it is - I averaged a legitimate laugh every five minutes, which is far better than the modern average - but it's missing the sharp-edged points that helped his previous films transcend generic comedy. Borat was as much about a cultural disconnect as it was naked men wrestling in a hotel lobby, and Bruno used its explicit shocks to challenge homophobia in the wild. Despite a hammy attempt to shoulder in a deeper message about modern democracy, The Dictator has nothing remotely intelligent to say. Take that for what you will; there's still a place in film for plain, dumb laughs, but I was hoping for something more unique considering Cohen's track record.

A pretty basic plot, the action was good, but for being a comedy movie, god does it fill that roll perfectly. Couldn`t breath for half the movie, genuinly so funny. Reccomended watch.

All I could think of while watching this is, "Is that supposed to be funny?". Because I get the sense that those moments are meant to elevate the quite frankly painful story. Yet another "Mature" rated Hollywood movie I couldn't finish.

Oh lord it was so painful to watch. I exactly knew after five minutes what to expect from the rest of the movie in terms of plot, acting skills and quality of humour. If some (very) few satiric lines do work well in the middle of this mess, what remains of 'The Dictator' are gross, vulgar, predictable, racist and facist so-called jokes. The great majority of them couldn't even manage to make me smile. It's a total shame because this could have been way better with lighter jokes, less useless nude scenes and with more valuable characters. In the end of the day it feels like this movie is making fun of everyone without ever proposing something new nor interesting. This is the kind of movies that can make you laugh if you are a casual teenager watching it with beers and friends, but as soon as you develop your critical mind you can't enjoy it anymore. The only things that made me not give it a straight zero out of ten are the artistic direction (including lighting, decor, colours, sequences of plans), some acting skills (especially from Zoey (Anna Faris) and the doctor (Aasif Mandvi) but surely not from the main lousy Aladeen (Sacha Baron Cohen)), and eventually the soundtrack. So a big congratulations to the many producers, who apparently did their best to prevent this huge cargo filled with excrement from sinking and arriving in a beautiful package before our revolted eyes. All the rest leaves a disgusting taste of preheated dirt and garbage served as the main cold dish.

1 hour and 20 minutes of nonestop laughter. Just Amazing. Not exactly a memorable movie, no great plot or characters, but I just couldn't breathe for half of the movie. A solid 9/10

It's a mix of Cohan's satirical humor with a typical romantic comedy. You can't stop laughing.

I felt like it again and then the film can also be really fun. Gives some good funny moments that still make people laugh. Light fare for in between. The film is just Aladeen.

Stupid story with a stupid script but it does get better half way give it a chance.

The Dictator has a muddily plot but the jokes throughout this movie can be hit and miss. There's some good laughs half way throughout and some of them don't really work in my opinion.

Sacha Baron Cohen's best movie ever! The best satirical comedy around. Go watch it, it's frickin amazing!

It sets the timer off with its own jokes, it is a self created doom, at least there won't be any regrets. The Dictator I would like to give the credit to the director, Larry Charles and he should get it, for he is managing this entire project. But I feel like this is his (Sacha Baron Cohen) doing all the way. From start to finish, from low to high points, from head turning away moments to screen shutting moments, he loves zapping you with bizarrely wrong information. That is his kick. That is his humor. Sacha is famous for going against the opinions of.. well, the entire world. He has to be completely wrong. And for that he must know what is actually right. Now, this is where his subtlety and smartness actually pays off. For his humor isn't just crass or offensive or edgy. It understands the day to day issue that each comic writer goes through while dealing with the obligatory aspect of the storytelling. The obligatory section is where you have to mold the structure of the film in a certain way in order to reach the goal. Now, understanding that very equilibrium gives him leverage over the command that he orders to now distract you. He is aware of the fact that you are eventually watching a film, a comic one, in particular. And he manages to mock even those elements that not only is just smokes and ashes but is thought provoking and witty. I still don't know what sign was he looking towards when he made up a fake name in front of the police. Another repeating gag is Anna Faris and the way she is dressed in the film. All those references that he uses to describe her will remain the highlight of the film for me. The Dictator is a good anecdote that would work better in a talk show or as a stand up gig than it doea in or as a film.

I can appreciate the offensive but hilarious Humor in this Movie, there might be funnier and better Movies out there but this one is definitely worth checking out.

It's a silly racist fairytale of a movie by Sacha and co, but amidst the disastrously rushed first act, there are moments of touching sweetness along with brilliant political commentary with mysteriously warming laughs alongside Aladeens quest for resurgence.

The Dictator is no classic and often feels offensive just for the sake of being offensive. But more than enough of the OTT jokes hit home to make this an entertaining ride.

Este film, en general, exagera algunos momento de la trama, y que, para suerte de esta película, esas exageraciones resultan eficaces y logran mantenerse en una buena atmósfera sin desembarcarse en un ángulo desfavorable., y, por tanto, le dan a este metraje más humor y lo hacen más variado.

Hey look everyone, it's Sacha Baron Cohen offensively portraying a minority that most people do not understand and over blowing the stereotype to make those ignorant people laugh. let's face it, while Sacha might have been bring up some intelligent dialogue about cultural indifference, most of that dialogue was spent in Borat, leaving this movie only partially funny.

The Dictator is simply just wastes 83 minutes of your life. This film is nothing more than a money grab after the success of Borat and Bruno. Don't bother.

dictator was okay . Sacha Baron Cohen was great this film then his other films like bruno and borat . Sacha did his finest work but everyone has high expectations for Cohen's offensive humor . some of his humor i did not get in this but this movie was bettter then borat .

Consistently offensive (to varying effectiveness), The Dictator is funny in spots, but is also filled with jokes that are too stupid to be funny. Now of course this was not trying to be a fantastic film or anything, but I do wish that the jokes were way more consistent. In addition, in terms of story, the romantic aspect added to this one did not actually add anything to the movie at all and in fact subtracted from the movie. More dictatorship, less random, forced, and unnecessary romance. At the end of the day, this one is not a trainwreck like I feared it might be and could be a good movie to watch if you want a few good laughs and a hilarious speech on dictatorships, but sadly other than that, there is not much to see. As I said before, this one could have been a lot better if it had been a lot more consistent.

Behind all the crude, obscene and derogatory content that makes up the still hilarious film that is 'The Dictator', it directly pokes fun at democratic governments around the world, becoming a perfect political satire while also playing on the funny bones, Sacha Baron Cohen proves to be original in his content, while also pulling no punches at who gets caught in the firing line. This is the first scripted film Cohen has created, it falls a fluid story compared to the equally as hilarious but cringeworthy 'Borat' and 'Bruno', yet when I went to see the film, the cinema was in complete uproar, all in a good way of course, it certainly pushes boundaries but addresses the dark and black comedy that people seem to relate to today, its short and snappy at 89 minutes long, but feels just the right about of funny. Cohen plays the role of Admiral General Aladeen of Wadiya, he acts like we assume a dictator would, big palace, plenty of worshipping followers and a flamboyant lifestyle of sex encounters with celebrities, this set up includes a small role for Megan Fox, which is hysterical as we are then shown his wall of conquests, males included. But his life is always in danger, not only because of his regime and his slimy right hand man Tahir (Ben Kingsley), but he plays judge. jury and executioner (or so he thinks) as he will uses his power to dispose of any man who deceives him, yet this even comes down to a nuclear warhead not being pointy enough. When his visit to America ends i na betrayal of trust, he is thrust into the streets of New York unknown, as his iconic beard has been removed, he finds a radical anti-Aladeen health store run by Zoey (Anna Faris), unaware of his real identity, she lets him into her life. Faris has really let herself be the subject of many puns and putdowns throughout the film, growing real armpit hair and even being called a "chubby Justin Bieber". Its full of direct attacks at everything involving the American Dream, and a particular scene in a helicopter with two tourists perfectly capture the mindset of an often paranoid nation, but probably for good reason. Its full of crude yet delicious humour that just gets funnier as the film goes on, it seems to play out as a regular "error of their ways" film, but then throws it all back in your face to keep us interested, Kingsley is an unlikely delight alongside Cohen, while Faris continues to have excellent comic timing for all the right moments. This is a comedy not for the faint-hearted, but political satire for all to enjoy, offensive but perhaps a little close to home.

Haters can hate on Sacha Baren Cohen and this movie all they want, but they have to admit that at times, it is very funny. Although sometimes being stupid, that doesn't take away from the humor. Cohn is the master of creating comical situations, and The Dictator is just that: an 83 minute compilation of comical scenes and sight gags. But, for what it is, that's all that's needed to make this movie funny.

Sacha Baron Cohen really tries to extend the shock factor to create comedy, but the method has worked thin and has made me lose interest in his next project.

The dictator is a funny film. It makes you laugh a lot and the time passes really quick. It's not a quality film but it's entertaining though if you like this kind of comedies

Some of the jokes hit really low. But the production value is high, and the political satire is both sharp and meanwhile feels relaxed enough to qualify as 'casual entertainment'. If you're interested in the subject, there's enough juice in there for it to be a worthwhile pop cultural diversion.

It's not profound, but for the first time in Baron Cohen movies, it has a plot. It's also the funniest movie of the year, and that was its target. If you want to laugh, go and see it!

Funny, Restless, Offensive and full of Banned Jokes about US The Dictator is killer funny. This is definitely not a documentary but its a good comedy. Sacha Baron Cohen nailed it as the role of Aladeen! But the parents won't be happy because this film is TOTALLY INAPPROPRIATE. Larry Charles has made Bruno which was also inappropriate but for adults it's okay. And even though its 14A it's very inappropriate. Well 7/10 for me!

I have just watched this film and I thought it was very funny, with all the racist and sexist comments although may want to consider watching this if sensitive to sexist or racist comments. One of the best films I have watched in 2012/13

Sacha Baron Cohen is a good actor and a great screenplay writer and that's the only reason I watched this film. A few jokes were thought provoking and some of them were really lame and cheap. Full-on satire and disgusting & vulgar humor are the qualities of the Dictator. But despite that, I only give it 5 marks because it is just an average film. Not too good and not bad.

This movie should of been better than it is, I wanted to love this so much but it was a massive let-down. Don't get me wrong though, Sacha Baron Cohen is a great charactor actor and the supporting cast isn't all that bad either but what made Borat so great (and to a lesser extend, Bruno) was the witty yet shocking humour of it all. With Borat the humour came naturally because of it's mockumentary style filming and the use of unexpected real people. This is a scripted film where it tries too hard with the shocking jokes that they arn't witty enough, hell some of them wern't even funny! it's a passe movie and a enjoyable watch but it's also the sort of film that will sit on your DVD shelf for all eternity.

Sasha Baron Coen is like marmite for me in every film he shoots, you either love him or hate him! I skipped Bruno because i was not keen on Borat, and was going to give The Dictator a miss too....I am glad i didn't. One of the funniest films i have seen in a long time. I doubt i would watch it again but for a one off rental this is a good choice.

Yes, it is both funny and offensive. I appreciate the execution of this idea. Its much better executed than "You Don't Mess with the Zohan", but too many scenes in this comedy fall flat, and there isn't enough plot to compensate for this.

Really funny and entertaining. The movir comes out fully with its political satire of the oppression of the Middle East and its nervy relationship with the West. The adult humor is a bit extreme and children should probably not watch this movie but it's really funny overall.

The last movie where I laughed so much was The Hangover. Different kind of movie, but very funny. A few parts were a little over the top and gross, but overall it very good. To me, Sasha's style is similar to that of the creators of Southpark, but somewhat more refined.
