Set It Up, from its title on down, is a fresh mixture of a reliable formula.

Set It Up is as formulaic as they come. That fact alone isn’t enough to avoid it on Netflix though. Most fans of this genre know what they are getting into, easily enjoying the charming displays of friendship, the few silly moments, and predictable ending.

It's satisfying, for the most part—a solid romantic comedy with sharp dialogue, amusing characters, a soundtrack of well-worn feel-good hits, and a few surprises up its sleeve. Its only major flaw is an inability to imagine the bosses as richly as the leads.

While the plot is familiar, Katie Silberman’s witty script plays with expectations.

It’s the stars who have to work hardest to sell this kind of egg-white confection, and so they do. Having both charmed individually in previous vehicles, Deutch and Powell combine to winkingly wholesome effect, bringing just enough human self-awareness to their tidy back-and-forth banter to make it palatable.

You don’t need to be well-versed in rom-coms to know that, in the process, Harper and Charlie will ultimately fall into each other’s arms, but getting there proves to be a slog courtesy of screenwriter Katie Silberman’s talky, sitcom-ready dialogue and director Claire Scanlon’s ponderously uneven pacing.

The expectation that a female-written, female-directed effort would yield something refreshingly different is scotched within the first few minutes.

It's not that original and the plot is a little sequential, but there are some smart writing moments that ensure at least slight chuckles that allow the performances to continue buoying towards the finish line.

"Set It Up" é um filme que segue a formula base do gênero. Se você não se preocupa com isso, não é de todo mal assistir, mas caso esteja saturado... Por mais que haja uma produção, de forma geral, bem feita, o filme carece em diversos aspectos apenas em detrimento de uma trama fácil, o que o deixa incrivelmente vazio. Ainda há um esforço em alguns momentos de passar algo além do proposito entretenimento, mas os personagens são tão contraditórios e unidimensionais que de nada serve. O desenvolvimento é muito obvio, tampouco natural. As piadas são forçadíssimas, e não funcionam em 95% das vezes. Diversos diálogos seguem aquela linha "imprevisível/hostil" de quinta serie que não funciona por ser encaixada de maneira tão genérica. Ninguém é engraçado o tempo todo, mas o roteirista se esqueceu disso. Como se já não bastasse, o proposito da briga - genérica do gênero - que incentiva o plot não faz tanto sentido na nossa visão. Sabemos que a protagonista idolatra a chefe, e os motivos até nos são ditos, mas nunca demonstrados. Tudo que vemos são chefes insuportáveis, unidimensionais e antipáticos. Ai que me vem o questionamento: essa importância dada aos mesmos realmente convence? Fora toda a explicação que a protagonista dá a chefe sobre ela ter manipulado tudo. Tipo??? Ela nem se quer precisava ter falada aquilo. Um simples "ouvi o que não devia na hora errada no lugar errado" bastaria. Simplesmente forçado ao máximo. Enfim, no final das contas, não foi uma experiencia tão ruim, pois assisti com minha namorada, mas como uma obra solo... bem abaixo da própria media que os mesmos se inspiram tanto.
