Featuring sidesplitting performances from its stacked cast and some gnarly, shocking twists, Dito Montiel's Riff Raff is as fun as it is jaw-dropping, and will keep you entranced (and at times mildly disturbed), for its entire wacky runtime.

If Quentin Tarantino ever made a family film, it might look like “Riff Raff.”

"Riff Raff" is a darkly entertaining but derivative crime comedy/drama that features an amazing cast — some of them playing the kinds of roles we’ve come to expect from them, but others out of their go-to comfort zone reminding us of their range and versatility. If Quentin Tarantino ever made a family film it would be this.

Riff Raff is one of those perfectly solid crime comedy flicks that is very watchable, reasonably entertaining, and ultimately forgettable. The star-studded cast clearly has fun with the material, and works well with each other, offering just enough color to the picture, that the final act standoff creates a bit of solid tension. Up to that point though the tension was mostly missing, as the film frequently cuts to flashbacks to tell the story, and disregards the main plot by telling a bunch of B stories about the relationships these characters have with each other. The script is the single weakest aspect of the film. Son runs back to his father to hide from assassins who are out for revenge, and one of them used to work with his father is as familiar of a crime plot as it exists. Then the surprises are very obvious. Comedy is again a try-hard version of Tarantino and Richie style. There are funny bits, but not as many as they were intended to have. And then you just have silly, over-the-top parts that are out of the realm of believability. If you want to relax and watch something kind of stupid, but kinda fun in a crime comedy genre, this fits the bill. For anything more, it's a no.

The cast’s enthusiasm, especially that of Coolidge and Murray who are willing to play the most loathsome of people, makes up for a lot.

There doesn’t seem to be a single original bone in this film’s body that gives you a parade of half-baked comedic scenes braided with a trite thriller and family mystery.

Had all those assets been funneled into a movie with some tonal consistency and a script that built credible relationships, the result might have been a nasty bit of fun. Instead, it wobbles awkwardly between creeping mob menace and scrappy sitcom, inching toward a violent climax that still doesn’t acquire cohesion.

How do you cram a cast of A-listers, led by Bill Murray, Jennifer Coolidge and Pete Davidson, into a crime caper so laugh deprived that calling it a comedy qualifies as false advertising? Here’s your answer. And it’s a crying shame.

I don’t go out of my way to drag films, as there is so much time and effort put into every project, and a film of this caliber was likely made with the best of intentions. But intending to craft a pitch-black dark crime comedy is different from actually executing one well. And Riff Raff just doesn't land.

With a cast that includes Bill Murray, Jennifer Coolidge and Pete Davidson you’d expect comedy gold. But this turns out to be more gloomy than funny. Ed Harris heads a relatively well-adjusted family that’s disurputed when a second son shows up with bad guys in pursuit. That rather oblique summary is better left unexplained, so the story has some surprises. Although this film isn’t really about plot, but character. Coolidge is less ditzy than usual, but still playing a mess. It’s Murray who provides the most laughs with his delightfully dark turn. The rest of the cast is fine. The script takes time to get up to speed and when it does, the finale doesn’t really deliver anything unexpected. There are some amusing moments, esp. the big final showdown, but this is basically a family crime drama with less comedy than expected.

hi I think wasted its potential in the editing, leaving me with something that I don't think I would end up wanting to watch again. This film is NOT a comedy by the way.
