Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

This is the perfect summer movie and perhaps the best Pirates of them all.

It's a Herculean task to steal the thunder from a Johnny Depp performance, but Richard Griffiths (best known these days as Harry Potter's tubby Muggle uncle, Vernon Dursley) does exactly that.

This installment, which is subtitled "Give Us Your Money, Sheep," really isn't a Pirates of the Caribbean movie at all.

Apart from Cruz, who throws herself lustily into her tough-seductress role, the actors give negligible performances, with McShane, Rush, and Keith Richards in a repeat cameo all playing nigh-identical smug glowerers.

Small kids won't really appreciate Johnny Depp, either, though frankly he's getting to be less fun as the series ages, possibly realizing that what's riskiest in Pirates 4 isn't walking the plank, but jumping the shark.

On Stranger Tides has the fishy smell of something washed ashore and sold as new. But this shipwreck isn't worth a wooden doubloon.

Even the most forgiving moviegoer will recognize this movie as the blatant cash-grab that it is.

It was a good movie full of action, adventure, comedy, and interesting special affects. It might have some cheesy parts and love relationships in the background. It even leaves you with a cliffhanger at post-end credits.

Greetings from Lithuania. "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" (2011) is a disappointing movie considering that it is one of the most expensive movies ever made. As a "Pirates of Caribbean" films go, its not a bad one, but also least entertaining from first 4 original films. The plot here is my least favorite here. Storytelling felt disjointed. While acting was uniformly solid, it felt like stars of the film Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush came here to get those crazy high paychecks (especially Mr. Depp's legendary 55 million paycheck). The supporting cast was, again, uniformly solid, but nothing to write home about. Considering its production budget, its a highly disappointing film. Its a highly forgettable one, and it doesn't have that jaw dropping action spectacle scenes - all three previous movies had those. Music was as usually solid due to Hans Zimmer's involvement. There is also a romance storyline involving Syrena and a priest (?), yet it doesn't work much because it was to short to begin with. It ended on a kind of cliffhanger. While this romance idea was fresh between mermaid and man, they wasted it. Overall, "On Stranger Tides" isn't a bad movie by any means, and its quite entertaining give the poorly involving plot. Considering how much they spent on this movie, it should have been way more spectacular and crazy fun ride. Unfortunately, it was only a ride.

While Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has a better conclusion than it's sequels (and the same gorgeously talented cast), it has a thin plot, a choppy storytelling and, thus, a truly unsatisfying result.
