Nil by Mouth is a scaldingly invigorating filmaking debut. [06 Mar 1998, p.D7]

Shot through a bleary haze of cigarette smoke, alcohol, and hard drugs, Nil By Mouth is the cinematic equivalent of Oldman's old acting style, a return to form by absentia.

Within my top 5 movies. Ray Winstone & kathy burke are magnificent and i love the way it feels like your a fly on the wall watching these people, very hard hitting and some brilliant music that fits the film perfectly. Could be hard to watch for some though.

Nil by Mouth is an extraordinary piece of cinema that resonates deeply with anyone familiar with the gritty realities of South East London. As someone who has grown up and still lives in this area, I feel that the film’s raw portrayal of life feels less like a kitchen sink drama and more like a fly-on-the-wall documentary. The authenticity of the characters and their environment is both compelling and distressing. Ray Winstone, Laila Morae and Kathy Burke deliver performances that are nothing short of incredible, embodying their roles with a visceral intensity that makes the film hard to watch yet impossible to look away from. Their portrayals are so genuine that they blur the lines between acting and reality, capturing the essence of a world many would rather forget. In his directorial debut, Gary Oldman crafts a brutally honest and deeply personal narrative. His depiction of the underbelly of South East London is uncompromising, showcasing the harshness of life that, for the best reasons, is slowly being eroded by gentrification. While the changing landscape might be welcomed, the film is a stark reminder of a past that is still a part of the area’s identity. Nil by Mouth is South London’s equivalent to Taxi Driver, a cinematic exploration of a society’s darker aspects. It’s a powerful statement on the human condition, and while it’s not an easy watch, it’s essential. One can only hope that Oldman returns to filmmaking soon, as his voice and vision are as necessary now as they were when this was released in 1997.

Violence breeds violence, and Oldman’s film shows us this horrific reproduction without compromise, hesitation or shame.

Raw, unsettling account of a working-class London family beset by poverty, drug abuse, and domestic violence. The screenplay by filmmaker Oldman is based on his own youthful experience in similarly distressed circumstances, and his directorial debut has the virtue of authenticity if not of understatement. [20 Feb 1998, p.B2]

Nil by Mouth is slow to get going, and meanders before its impact scenes in the second half. Still, its final intensity can leave you exhausted. If you stay with the picture, it's a powerful experience you're unlikely to forget.

This film is a portrait, and it's a mesmerizing, unforgettable one. The story of how a boy like Gary Oldman comes out of this world and becomes something different -- that's a drama, but perhaps its end has yet to be written.

Gary Oldman made his directorial debut with this unflinching portrait of life in a London family. Bleak, violent and foul-mouthed, it's the story of people battling their way through miserable lives that are all they have ever known. [25 Sep 2010, p.35]

Well, the whole drama is in this. The happier time to enjoy drinking alcohol for people to get drunk filled with booze. For me, I drink coke, Diet Coke that is. Why? Because you're about to witness the British Drama filled with good performance from all the British actors/actresses in this dark and berserk film that actor Gary Oldman has directed. Nil By Mouth. And get this: it is absolutely berserk cause it has too many sexual swear words in it. Plus the fact that it's not the only film that ever had too much swearing. Well, I don't want to offend you guys for saying this, so please, brace yourselves. It had 428 F words in it and 92 (the you know what) words. Shocking, isn't it? The Wolf of Wall Street did that. What about it? The domestic violence is brutal for the most part so I guess that's all I can tell you all about it. Thank you for stick up with me on this review. This review is nothing to offend. This movie had a winner of 2 BAFTA Awards.
