Night Always Comes

It’s beautifully constructed and executed, with a lead character who reveals new biographical and emotional layers to us with each new scene, and a backup cast stocked with small-scale underworld types.

There are a few speedbumps of illogic along the gnarled route of Night Always Comes, but they can’t negate the pace of the storytelling, Mr. García’s gymnastic shooting, or the sense of there being no bottom to the well of darkness explored by Mr. Caron.

If only Jennifer Jason Leigh had been available for a few more days of shooting, perhaps Night Always Comes could have put some flesh on the bones of its family drama, enlivening what is otherwise an overly familiar crime caper, but like an absent parent, the supporting elements of the film just can’t be counted on when you need them.

It’s a compelling tale of increasingly hazardous desperation, even if the star and her fellow-Brit director Benjamin Caron (oth veterans of royalty drama series “The Crown) aren’t necessarily an ideal fit for this very American, down-and-out milieu.

Handsomely made but tediously plotted, Kirby is more than deserving of this kind of meaty, she’s-in-every-frame role, but Night Always Comes sunsets long before we get there.

Night Always Comes tries to be both seat-edge action thriller and searing social issue drama and while Caron is able to squeeze suspense out of the early, frenetic moments, there’s not enough emotional weight to the more human final act.

Breathless, ticking-clock pacing would have stripped the narrative of the many pauses where we’re allowed to think “Oh come ON” before the next stock character makes a bow, the next blow lands or next crooked angle presents itself.

Anchored by Vanessa Kirby’s raw, magnetic performance, Night Always Comes is a tense, atmospheric plunge into Portland’s underbelly. While its script stumbles with thin character logic and underdeveloped themes, the film sustains a gripping urgency through stark visuals and relentless pacing. It may not fully land its emotional punches, but Kirby ensures it remains a bleak, memorable ride.

The Night Always Comes builds on a very powerful premise: a woman forced to take extreme measures to save her family’s home. With that setup, it seemed inevitable that tension and emotion would combine into a story of great weight. Yet what begins with intensity gradually loses impact due to a script that doesn’t always sustain its own ambitions.Vanessa Kirby is, without question, the film’s driving force. Her presence fills the screen, conveying the pain and desperation of a woman cornered by circumstance. The problem is that her talent sometimes outshines the material itself: she’s such a strong performer that it becomes difficult to buy into the fragility of her character, wrapped as it is in a drama that feels overly **** direction has its strengths. Benjamin Caron knows how to create a bleak atmosphere, with moments where the audience feels the suffocating weight surrounding the protagonist. But the visual design is too polished: the streets, the interiors, everything looks crafted for a postcard rather than a raw narrative, which hurts the film’s authenticity.Narratively, it starts strong, transmitting a sense of urgency that hooks you early. Over time, though, the situations feel increasingly forced. Certain twists seem driven more by a need to keep up tension than by natural storytelling. That lack of internal consistency turns what should have been an emotional journey into something mechanical.Even so, it’s hard not to feel sympathy for the lead. Her struggle to keep going evokes empathy, even if the script pushes emotions too hard. Instead of letting the story breathe, it insists on underlining every dramatic beat. This drains spontaneity from a drama that could have been far more **** the end, The Night Always Comes is watchable and held together by Kirby’s intensity, but it falls short of what its opening promised. It has its moments and conveys the weight of despair, but in a way that feels too manufactured to truly leave a lasting mark.

Claro que aqui temos algo bem higienizado, ainda assim a grande interpretação da protagonista faz a tensão não ceder. Filme competente ao que se propõe.

In many ways this film copies Good Times, starring Robert Pattinson, but substitutes a female lead and is not quite as compelling. It tells the story of a woman with a storied past who makes one bad decision after another in a desperate bid to get some quick cash. While stylish, the story ultimately goes nowhere.
