Frothy and exuberantly entertaining - in part because of the sexual innuendoes - it's the best romantic comedy so far this year.

Watching McDormand navigate that transformation is the kind of thing that can keep your hope in movies, and in actors, alive.

At times, it is axiomatically wholesome to watch a film stars Amy Adams, this 2008 indie fare directed by a relatively unknown name Bharat Nalluri is a delicious throwback of the era at the threshold of WWII, and it is a jolly one-day adventure in the posh London social stage. continue reading my review on my blog: google cinema omnivore, thanks

We've lived through many "fish out of water' comedies - Miss Pettigrew is able to elevate the genre and make something meaningful. It's a love story, a fight for women's rights, and a hilarious showcase for then-newcomer Amy Adams.

Looks and sounds great, and is at its best when it isn't trying too hard to have fun.

How light is this movie? So buoyant that even an air raid warning, signaling that this whole world is about to crumble under the blitz, can’t dampen its giddy spirits.

It's left to the ideally cast McDormand to keep everything on track and, as expected, she weathers every tonal change with competence, confidence and a perfectly stiff upper lip.

I adore Frances McDor mand, but she's seriously miscast in a title role Emma Thompson could play in her sleep.

At least Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day has the good grace to go wrong quickly, you don't have to sit there squirming with doubt.

This was a surprising little period comedy elevated by some stellar performances from its cast. Frances McDormand is great in the title role (no surprise), but I thought it was Amy Adams that really makes the film something special. We've seen her in this sort of role before as the cute, peppy, ditsy girl, however, she really finds something in the character and by the end of the film you really feel like you've completed her journey alongside her. Lee Pace is also terrific (underrated actor imo) and has some great chemistry with Adams. The movie is predictable in some regards because you know exactly where the film is going to go, but I didn't mind having these actors take me there. Great 1930s setting. I was surprised by how much I loved the film, I fell for every bit of it.
