A subtly hilarious supporting performance from Frances Fisher, as Moore's mother, and a latter-day Sid and Nancy (Michael Sheen and Parker Posey, seeming deliriously inebriated the entire time) round out the thoroughly diverting cast.

This frantic scrambling to create a credible fantasy is typical of the script by Aline Brosh McKenna and Robert Harling, which whips the "opposites attract" recipe into a souffl? that never rises.

It's a middling film that wastes a lot of good opportunities, as well as two fine, charming co-stars.

The larger question is not whether these two will wind up together, but rather, if the filmmakers wanted to make a teen movie, why didn't they use real teenagers?

Moore works to feign vitality where none exists, but that just makes it even more embarrassing to watch her writhe around fruitlessly in the most thankless and ill-fitting of roles.

Posey and Sheen appear to have a blast playing oversized characters so obnoxious that it's obvious they belong together.

This shabby enterprise gets so many things so wrong that it freezes your face into a cringe.
