When class conflict stirs the viewer's attention as much as a canine hero's homecoming, it's clear that this isn't the usual (read: mindless) family entertainment.

It's a welcome throwback to the carefully crafted family films of the studio era. The scenery is lovely, and the cast is entirely worthy of the enterprise (including the regal and athletic star).

The new Lassie is faithful to Knight's story, capturing its sweep, Dickensian social contrasts and high emotion. All that is enhanced by a splendid cast.

Peter O'Toole is magisterial, blustering and sublime: His half-deaf duke still has a touch of Lawrence of Arabia's showstopping power.

Lassie balances cruelty and tenderness, pathos and humor without ever losing sight of its youngest audience member.

The young actors are charming, O'Toole commands every scene he's in, the scenery is lush, and the animals are gorgeous.

Writer-director Charles Sturridge doesn't mess with the Lassie formula--he provides plenty of dog-porn shots of the collie bounding through scenery in slow motion--but the overqualified cast puts the film over the top.

God damn. Thought this was a family film and nothing else, but I guess I'm wrong, as things quickly escalate to dark places. But still, the acting from was great, cinematography is gorgeous and the cast is insane, and everyone had they time to shine.
