Shrewd, tough, and lively -- a junior-league "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."

In Winona Ryder's case, Girl Interrupted is a showcase in which her brittle, angry portrait shows she has graduated from ingenue to actress.

"Girl, Interrupted" is one of the best movies ever made about addiction and mental health, as it shows how destructive the cycle of abuse and recovery can be. Winona Ryder starred as the teenager Suzanne, who is dispatched to a mental health facility after suffering a traumatic breakdown. Over the course of her stay, Suzanne gets close to the fellow survivors, and begins working on the challenging road to recovery. Director James Mangold avoids getting saccharine; the film is uncompromisingly bleak, yet ultimately is alive and realistic by showing these girls for who they are and their struggles and has a powerful message about the importance of asking for help. Ryder certainly gives one of her best performances, but "Girl, Interrupted" featured a scene stealing role for Angelina Jolie, who co-starred as one of the facility’s most troubled inhabitants. Jolie perfectly captured the defiant, dangerous mannerisms of an addict; the performance earned her a well-deserved Academy Award victory for Best Supporting Actress. On this film's 25th Anniversary, it is underrated but its aged super well

The movie -- even though it's based on real events -- seems unsatisfying and unconvincing.

There's very little plot, and director Mangold's attempts to make a connection between the social confusion of the '60s and Susanna's inner turmoil don't really work.

Ryder's commitment is impressive. If her movie only had her courage.

Mangold can't escape the fact that instead of someone in the throes of a genuine existential crisis, his star comes off as -- to paraphrase nurse Whoopi Goldberg -- a spoiled, lazy girl who's afraid to face life.

It's as if the book itself has been locked up and institutionalized, forced to conform to a system that all but obliterates its own unique personality.

Great performance by Angeline Jolie, she is really great in playing intense characters. Movie in general was okey, liked the cast and the story. It is a movie that's worth watching.

A gripping exploration of mental illness with standout performances, especially by Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie. Emotionally raw, thought-provoking, and unforgettable.

Not a bad movie although Jolies character is far more interesting than Ryders and this unsettles the fluidity of the movie. Overall it a watchable and at times enjoyable movie but is ends up as a second rate One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest

McMurphy and Lisa Angelina Jolie's beautiful performance, which the film is based on, also won her an Oscar. And the very good performance of Winona Ryder, who worked hard for her role, is the strong point of the film. This psychological drama is based on the memoirs of Susanna Kaysen, who spent 18 months in a mental hospital between 1967 and 1968 after attempting suicide. This movie is kind of reminiscent of the movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", especially the character "Lisa" is very similar to "McMurphy". And both films rely on these two characters.
