Fire Island

If Clueless is the definitive modern-day adaptation of Emma, then Fire Island deserves the same crown for Pride and Prejudice.

Written by comedian Joel Kim Booster, who also stars, the movie reframes the traditional rom-com by putting gay men into the leading roles and inviting viewers to experience drama and relationships that don’t often get the Hollywood spotlight.

Fire Island is every bit the hilarious and semi-meta rom-com you expect, packed with quips and well-timed jokes, but also makes ample time to continue the pursuits of Austen's story, exploring the emotional nuances of overcoming judgment for love.

Director Andrew Ahn proficiently handles the numerous plot lines, character conflicts, and the tonal shifts between raunch and sweetness.

Although the film doesn’t always deftly balance sentiment and broad humour, it is fun to spend time with such raucous company.

Fire Island is a true, escapist romcom at a time when audiences are still undernourished when it comes to queer romances that don’t end in death and despair.

Despite the shortcomings, Fire Island is a feel-good, enjoyable comedy and a celebration of queer, Asian American storytelling. Let’s hope its success paves the way for even more subversive films to come.

Found it entertaining and energetic, even if plot wise it was pretty standard formula.

The dynamics do not go beyond the superficial, and perhaps as much as it can be argued that its intention is not to go into any depth at all, that also highlights the lack of substance provided. There are bits and pieces of humor that work in scattered moments but don't really make up for the rest of the events that unfold on screen. As I said, what Fire Island wants to be is just fun before anything else and I assume that a certain part of the audience will accept it that way and there will be those who won't. After all it needs to be consumed in those terms for you to get a better deal out of it, because what this film doesn't achieve is to give variation to a tired genre.

This is one of the most boring movies of the entire year with an extremely cringy script.

Completely soulless, one dimensional characters, dialogue from 2014, Matt Rogers is a disaster, and Bowen can't do drama.
