Downfall: The Case Against Boeing

Rory Kennedy’s Downfall: The Case Against Boeing is a swift and beautifully clear documentary about many things, chief among them the cost of profit above all.

There are plenty of disturbing revelations, but it’s the totality of Boeing’s self-sabotaging, money-grubbing descent — starting with a post-merger change in leadership in the 1990s — that brings home how irresponsible corporate stewardship is a global harm worth correcting.

For all its academic precision and fact-based reportage, “Downfall: The Case Against Boeing” is at its most effective when we hear from the parents, the grown children, the widows, who had to receive the worst news anyone could ever imagine. This is when “Downfall” reminds us of the real costs of those two terrible tragedies.

It is likely to leave viewers shaken, and it is always comprehensible, even in sequences that illustrate what the pilots saw in the cockpit.

A work of impressive investigative cinema. ... Their choice to focus so tightly on a micro-scenario here does strand us, occasionally, in the weeds of detail. But it’s tough to watch such a flatly incriminatory report without taking a macro view of society’s villains and heroes.

Basic yet enraging ... it shines a harsh light at one of the greatest evils of our time with all the panache of a "Dateline" special.

Though Downfall does some things extremely well, in the balance it’s not very good cinematic journalism and it’s only persuasive to a very limited extent — one that is almost impossible to dispute but doesn’t really take a vital conversation anywhere interesting.

Um ótimo documentário sobre o desastre no projeto de aviões da empresa norte-americana "Boeing", e de como a busca pelo lucro pode deixar de lado a vida das pessoas. Diferentemente de "Fire of love", que focava mais em relações humanas do que na parte técnica dos vulcões, aqui já é o posto: foca bem mais na parte técnica e mecânica dos aviões, esboçando o dispositivo que fazia com que o bico do avião se inclinasse para baixo e provocasse acidente. Ainda por cima, contém uma série de depoimentos dos trabalhadores e engenheiros sobre a transformação da conceituada empresa em um negócio que visava apenas reduzir custos, mesmo considerando todo o risco do empreeendimento ( por exemplo, a mudança de prédio, para deixar as decisões mais para administradores do que para peritos). A escolha em não focar na história de vida das pessoas atingidas, e sim em detalhes mais técnicos, pode comprometer a experiência daqueles que assistem esse filme para se emocionar. Mas como não é essa a proposta, eu particularmente gostei, as informações tem uma edição equilibrada, e embora eu tenha ficado meio perdido em algumas passagens, o substrato da proposta foi passada com louvor. Por fim, há uma mensagem meio anti-capitalista, e não sei ao certo se subiu um pouco de tom, afinal, foi o capitalismo em si que levou ao avanço das técnicas. Talvez fosse o caso de abordar as agências reguladoras, que são instituições criadas justamente nos EUA, e que no Brasil reverberaram na criação, por exemplo, da ANAC. Então, a mim soou como panfletagem, embora o saldo total ficou positivo, não é um filme cansativo e consegue trazer muitas informações relevantes e históricas sobre a indústria em questão.

This is a very interesting and heartbreaking look at the dangers of unchecked capitalism.

Excellent documentaries that explain a lot about plane security versus profit organization. Very emotional and touching.

A pretty ordinary documentary; still, a reminder of the dangers of hypercapitalism. There are bad CGI recreations and your regular talking heads moments, but the way Rory Kennedy assembles the facts gives a good pace to the narrative. The family testimonies, of course, are the emotional part of the film, but the segment about how Boeing went from an exemplary company to a greedy one is the core of it. Showing the root cause of these disasters is what I found more interesting about this documentary.
