SummaryIt's 1964, St. Nicholas in the Bronx. A vibrant, charismatic priest, Father Flynn, is trying to upend the school's strict customs, which have long been fiercely guarded by Sister Aloysius Beauvier, the iron-gloved Principal who believes in the power of fear and discipline. The winds of political change are sweeping through the country, and, indee... Read More

Doubt is still overpowering; it took me a while when it was over to stop shaking. It's the dramatist’s business to sow doubt, to set down points of view that can't be reconciled, and Shanley makes visceral the notion that one can be right but never absolutely right, that doubt might be our last, best hope.

When a film challenges you to think and question from the very start to the end, you find yourself wholly invested in the theatrical warfare on screen. Superbly brought from the stage to the screen, the film goes where many films fear to. The stirring showcase of actors only adds to the perfection. One of Streep's finest late-career performances.

Watching the first sermon about doubt is without doubt liberating. I have enjoyed every moment of this film. The cast gave an outstanding performance. Top notch.

Along with its disappointments and its narrowness of intellectual focus, Doubt offers up the crackling pleasures of performance and a narrative that snaps shut like a mousetrap. It's the movie equivalent of a rousing night at the theater.

A feast of great acting, although in the final analysis it's a filmed stage play rather than a brilliant movie.

Just when you begin to think you know who the cat and mouse really are, in steps Viola Davis to steal not just her scene but the entire movie from Streep.

The problem with Doubt is its dramatic certainty.

Streep can do anything. She is, of course, wasted on this elephantine fable; if only Doubt had been made in 1964, shot by Roger Corman over a long weekend, and retitled "Spawn of the Devil Witch" or "Blood Wimple," all would have been forgiven

A little controversial but without a doubt an amazing film that left me speechless. Meryl Streep and Phillip Seymour Hoffman give untouchable performances no doubt worthy of the highest of awards. The story was great. The emotional release I got from this film reminded me of The Godfather. Truely an amazing and underrated film.

Critics got this film so wrong. Yes it does center around a controversional issue (sexual abuse by priests of the catholic church) but its a fantastic film. Its interesting from start to finish, The main cast is excellent, and it features a satisfying ending. Go watch this film now!

The stagnant machinery of a clerical standoff: A 3.0-star "vivid" but rigid drift through moral ambiguity.2011 (3.0)I watched "Doubt" (2008) in 2011, and it remains a functional 3.0-star record in my archive—a "vivid" but ultimately "stagnant" exploration of "human distrust" that failed to provide a visceral "revelation" beyond its theatrical roots. While the production attempted a "sensational" and high-tension confrontation between tradition and progress, the narrative rhythm felt 100% like a filmed stage play, following a slow-burning trajectory that lacked the "chewy" cinematic rebellion found in my 5.0-star pillars. Seeing the "vivid" intensity of Meryl Streep—whose "pathetic" and stubborn adherence to discipline provided a rhythmic surge of conflict—against the "raw" and charismatic presence of Philip Seymour Hoffman created a high-tension atmosphere, yet the emotional payoff felt too "stagnant" to leave a permanent "sensational" scar. The 95% preservation of my memory is centered on the "stagnant" pacing of the rectory garden conversations and the "vivid" but "pathetic" uncertainty that plagued Amy Adams, creating a journey that felt more like a "stagnant" ritual of accusation than a "sensational" act of spirit. Unlike the "vivid" soul of "I’m Not There" or the "raw" tension of "The Machinist," this theatrical encounter provided no "sensational" shock to my system, leaving me in a state of "silent frustration" at its "stagnant" ambiguity. It stands in my 2011 record as a "vivid" exercise in acting prowess—a 3.0-star artifact of rhythmic patience that, while "raw" in its performances, remained too "stagnant" to reach the "sensational" heights of my most cherished psychological archives.

The film had good performances by everyone and the style of directing was interesting. The director made it fell like we were always eavesdropping and not suppose to hear what was taking place. But even with all the good performances it emerged as a strangely unsatisfying film which asked more questions than it answered.

Excellent performances by Streep, Hoffman and Davis still couldn't lift what emerged as a strangely unsatisfying film which asked more questions than it answered. As an adaptation of a stage play it had that faintly awkward, limited feel of a story that had been shrunk to fit the scenery.
