Cold Storage

A clever, funny, suspenseful, interestingly cynical science-fiction horror movie with a great collection of monsters — courtesy of make-up geniuses Dave and Lou Elsey — and a cast whose enthusiasm is, appropriately, infectious.

That Cold Storage hews closer to comedy doesn’t lessen the unnerving sensation of watching its horror unfold. Funny as the film is, the speed with which a biological agent can spread—when the powers that be find the very notion laughable—still makes one squirm in their seat.

A B-movie throwback with plentiful winks, it has few thrills, but it has a touch of science, a plausible-enough threat, suitably disgusting splatter, appealing actors and a fleet running time.

Cold Storage is a far better movie than you'd expect, thanks to its clever script, committed cast, and energetic direction. If you are hankering to watch more of Joe Keery battling monsters in the wake of the Stranger Things finale, this is just what the doctor ordered.

Unfortunately, in Cold Storage, the first act sets too high a bar to maintain, and the rest, though watchable, is busy-ness punctuated by green splatter.

The best moments are when Keery and Campbell get to be blue collar schlubs facing down these messy menaces. Maybe if there was more of their back-and-forth and less of Neeson and Torchia’s distant double act, or vice versa, then Cold Storage might balance between its gruesome and goofy aspects.

All the ingredients for a good movie, or at the very least a fun one, are present in Cold Storge: A charismatic and talented ensemble, a clever story, and an overall sense of playfulness that extends from the effects work to the production design of the 24-hour self-storage facility built over the old government bunker used to contain the fungus. However, that sense of playfulness doesn’t extend to the overall tone, leaving the movie feeling like a wasted opportunity.

An absolute treat. They hit the science fiction B‑film vibe perfectly. They do not skimp on delivering quality visual effects, and the actors give honest performances, treating the material with respect and understanding exactly what is needed to earn your buy‑in for the ride. Perfect runtime. Solid humour. A worthy way to spend ninety entertaining minutes.

High-level cinematography jumps on Joe Keery's back, expecting him to lead Cold Storage, a dark humorous, clock-to-apocalyptic, infection-type film, while also asking him to be sort of like Steve Harrington from Stranger Things. If you like Steve, and some of the goofiness of that universe, you will like this film too. The story follows former bioterror agent Robert Quinn (Liam Neeson) trying to stop imminent doom and Teacake (Joe Keery), a young employee just trying to get his life together unaware his workplace hides imminent doom. An old formula that works: the one who knows a lot is far from action but trying to get to it and to help the one who knows nothing but is where all the action is. So what is wrong with Cold Storage? Nothing. David Koepp, well known screenwriter, is behind this script too and delivers a nice, enclosed story with fun dialogs, thrill, and entertainment. That and an experienced cast, great match. The film just isn't an epic; it works but that is about it.

Managed to stay entertaining with slapped together tone and characters. I liked it.

A likeable cast and interesting premise aren't enough to overcome a rough final act that makes you feel like the 100-minute movie runs a good 10-15 minutes too long.
