SummaryFor Bobby Darin (Spacey), performing was his life. It kept his heart beating. He came alive onstage, even when he was near collapse offstage. In Beyond the Sea, Bobby tells us his own story, in his last great performance. (Lions Gate Films)

As long as Spacey is singing, the movie soars.

Artfully structured, combining old-school MGM-type musical numbers with occasional postmodern flourishes to keep the narrative moving.

Beyond the Sea. One of the best voices of the 50s. Kevin Spacey is the real fellow! Independently directed and performed all the musical parts. A little crumpled plot, and you don't always have time to follow the life of the great Bobby, but his life turned out to be so short that perhaps that's why everything happened so quickly.

Beyond the Sea never really moves beyond a skin-deep biopic, and always feels off-beat, but Spacey saves the show. His portrayal of Darin is almost spot on, and he has a surprisingly good singing voice. It may try a bit too hard, but it is worth watching if only for the "Beyond the Sea" number.

Vanity: the surest road to mediocrity.

Spacey is almost as swinging as Darin was, but his filmmaking leans toward tried-and-true formulas.

Apart from Caroline Aaron's turn as Darin's overbearing sister...Beyond the Sea has nothing to recommend it.

Much more "Splish" than "Splash."
10
Such a hopeless mess that there's no fun in tossing insults at its endless shortcomings.

This is a reasonably well made film but the plot/story is just so depressing and the main character is distinctly unlikeable. Its interesting I suppose to see what happened but its far from a gripping or engrossing watch, I'd say. Kevin Spacey (the least said about him the better) plays a rather spoilt, vain man with some decent associates, who have to put up with his strops. Bob Hoskins and John Goodman give decent performances and Kate Bosworth is ok as his other half, Sandra Dee. Its an ok watch but not especially memorable and I wouldn't particularly recommend it as such, no.
