Another Simple Favor

Viewers are better served by submitting to the immersive thrill of it all, in the context of a film that doesn’t ask us to ask too much of ourselves.

This movie veers in some truly wild directions and it's not quite as polished as its predecessor. At the same time, it feels in line with what came before. It certainly doesn't betray the characters or the world Feig has set up.

Another Simple Favour has built up enough goodwill to keep you invested, thanks largely to game performances from Lively and co-star Anna Kendrick.

The fashion alone, from design supervisor Stefano De Nardis and the costume team, elevates the film, turning it into an extravagant spectacle.

Though the simplest pleasures of Favor remain—catty chemistry between Kendrick and Lively, loopy twists, bravura statement outfits—the heat powering the concept has cooled to the extent that, despite the increased body count, the sequel feels as perfunctory as its title. It’s just Another one.

Director Paul Feig brings the same sly approach to this lavish follow-up, but the results feel even more strained than the original, which was often more stylish than deliciously diabolical.

To paraphrase the T-shirt, everyone here went to the Isle of Capri, and all we got was this lousy movie.

I haven’t seen the first movie but I watched this anyway and enjoyed it enough to stay engaged. It’s definitely goofy and nonsensical but I did laugh quite a bit. The cast and director do a good job of squeezing as much comedy as they can from a somewhat average script, with Blake Lively really hamming up her role in a self aware and camp manner that worked for me. Serviceable and entertaining enough for a casual viewing.

Noted comedy director Paul Feig has once again teamed with Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively for the sequel to their original murder mystery “A Simple Favor." When Lively’s character decides to get married in Capri, she invites her iffy best friend (Kendrick) to be her maid of honor. Their **** relationship is complicated with the inevitable murder, which takes some rather absurd turns before it’s solved. The film’s greatest asset is the playful chemistry between the 2 leads, plus Lively’s fabulous fashions. There’s not much true comedy and the only really fun character is provided by Elizabeth Perkins, as the mentally-unsure mom. As I said in the review of the first one, “Even though it’s seldom truly funny, it still manages to be entertaining in a fun, frothy style.”

Another Simple Favor arrives with the difficult task of following up a film that, while not groundbreaking, worked thanks to its freshness, style, and the performances of Kendrick and Lively. This sequel, however, falls short on almost every front. It tries to repeat the formula but without any surprise. There are twists, there’s glamour, there are European locations that look like postcards... but what’s really missing is purpose.Hollywood has been obsessed for years with filming in Europe as a shortcut to sophistication, but here it just feels like an excuse for a team vacation. And it shows. Capri looks beautiful, sure, but does it add anything to the story? Not really. What weighs this sequel down is the constant sense that everything is forced, that the original spark is gone, and that the characters are moving more out of obligation than conviction.Kendrick and Lively remain the best part, although they feel a bit restrained. The plot, on the other hand, deflates quickly, directionless and with an ending that’s both absurd and unnecessary. Worst of all, even though it’s under two hours, it feels long. It’s like when a show you once loved gets renewed for one season too many—and suddenly, everything feels **** short: it’s not a total disaster, but it’s yet another example that not every successful story needs a sequel. Sometimes it’s better to leave things on a high note than to risk ruining the memory.

Awful. Unfunny script, unlikeable characters, inane twists. Henry Golding steals all the scenes he’s in (and our eyes) and deserves much better material than this mess.

虽然已经忘了第一部了，但在Anna Kendrick和Blake Lively两个大美女的表演下，犹记得观影体验还是不错的。这部倒是原班人马，但又搞一遍“失散多年的Twin Sister”这种戏码……以及完全自嗨的故事情节，非常差劲。
