American Mary

This film — the second from the Soskas, and shot in their hometown, Vancouver, British Columbia — combines gore, quiet dread, feminist conviction and a visual classicism, often using a red palette, with impressive, unbelabored dexterity.

American Mary nods savvily to the ‘body horror’ of ‘Audition’ and ‘Dead Ringers’ but still possesses a truly original, deeply disturbing vision.

This tale of a violently disillusioned medical student’s wade into the weird world of extreme body modification doesn’t develop all its narrative and thematic ideas to the fullest. But the polished pic is still outre and entertaining enough to please most jaded horror fans.

Ultimately, American Mary simply reveals itself as a film with little on its mind, content to scare rubberneckers into contemplating the backstory of the more outlandish body manipulation jobs they’ve seen in public. A documentary would have sufficed.

The movie sags after Mary’s weak-willed acquiescence to crime, instantly turning her into a dull-eyed monster. You know her procedures are bound to stray from elective, but it’s hard to care.

Nonsensical and all-around third-rate, American Mary offers up Human Centipede-style surgical horror, except this time with endless absurd eroticism.

The acting is uniformly dreadful. The level of incompetence in both writing and direction is a scream.

American Mary gets points for being a novel mix of revenge fantasy, torture porn, and deviant sexual fantasy. Katharine Isabelle gives a solid performance as lead actress, but the casting is otherwise hollow, and the cameos seem like pandering when they're probably meant to be a nod to the body modification subculture. The plot gimmick works until the writers botch the last act with a failed attempt at a dramatic ending.

WTF did I just watch? Badly written. Badly acted. Terrible story. The only 2 redeeming parts of this movie are Katharine Isabelle and the body modification/suspension.

American Mary is kinda a horror/thriller movie however I think it tries too hard .. The only good thing in the entire film is seeing the actress who plays Mary Mason because she's beautiful and the rest is boring and the gore's not that impressive either. Stay away from this film because it's nothing special and one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
