The movie is never mechanical or emotionally contrived, and at its heart is a guileless, enchanting performance by Tautou.

It's been more than 20 years since the premiere.... I watched in the cinema and was captivated. Wonderfully realized, perfectly played characters, beautiful, a little unreal shots - everything that is missing in today's films... Great ideas, unusual shots and such a serene atmosphere. This is still an excellent film: warm, optimistic, a fairy tale from a Paris that no longer exists... Worth of rewatching!

Irresistibly endearing, with a visual verve all its own.

Wall Street Journal
An endearing film, and a fascinating one.

The screen is saturated with Gallic whimsy and the romance of Montmartre in the person of Amélie.

You could get drunk, or ill, on the high dose of whimsy in Amelie.

Sucks -- because it's a frenetic bore that insists on its audience's adoration while making no demands upon their intelligence.

Enchanting and whimsical. This is undeniably one of the best movies to get lost in. It’s quirky and entertaining in the right ways, and yet pulls on your heartstrings so perfectly. A perfect Rom-Com that you can tell has lent its form to almost every movie since. I’m incredibly glad I wanted to watch a foreign film last night because this is easily one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time.

There's no doubt that Jean-Pierre Jeunet's "Amélie" is the quirky face that launched a thousand ships. Having seen so many movies that have lifted from this without really seeing it myself is honestly kind of embarrassing. What's even more embarrassing if how lukewarm I am on it. Don't get me wrong, I like it just fine. It's pleasant, fanciful and idiosyncratic, but — for me — a lot of that is to a fault. Not all of the quirk rubbed me the wrong way, but there's definitely a decent amount in this that felt like quirk for quirk's sake. In addition, while the story ultimately gets the job done, I really wish the main cruz of things (Amélie and Nino) evoked as much emotionality as some of the other subplots in here. All in all, I'm definitely glad I saw this, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed.

Amelie: 6 out of 10: Sweet, light and sometimes a little irritating this strangely adult fable starts out very strong and sinks under the weight of it's too cute for words protagonist and her self made predicament. Amelie is a strange bird indeed. She seems initially one of those wonderfully original creations but as time in the movie marches on it becomes obvious. She is a twelve-year-old girl in a woman's body. Yup she has silly crushes plays silly pranks and a vivid imagination. In fact one could very much see her being played by a twelve year old. This would work perfectly if the movie wasn't so jarringly adult in other ways. (Amelie's quest works in a porn shop, people having hook-up sex in a daytime café) It is more of a tone issue than any objection to adult content. (As a glance at most of my other reviews will testify.) Also like most twelve-year olds Amelie pulls pranks and games a little to long. (After the 2-hour mark or so I was practically screaming at the screen to get on with it) Now don't get me wrong the first hour or so is one of the most delightful screen experiences. I loved the traveling gnome (which started a fad that lives on today) and liked the obsessive tape recording man in café. It also shows a true fantasy version of Paris like You've You Mail's New York. In fact when Amelie is helping others rather than on her own quest the movie seems to move briskly and with purpose. It is only in her pursuit of love that Amelie fails as both a person and a movie. Just like most twelve-year-old girls.

Worst and most pretentious piece of garbage ever seen. The excuse for a whole generation of unmatchable women to perpetrate in toxic behaviours.
