I don't have any idea what people liked about this. I found it to be weirdly paced and clumsily written. Add to those fatal flaw that the physics were optional during fight scenes which removed what little stakes there could have been. It was tropey, childish, directionless and uninspired.

Greetings from Lithuania. So i just returned from the 3D screening of "Alita: Battle Angel" (2019). This is the movie i first saw in development along James Cameron name for probably 10 years now. As the one who highly enjoyed Mr. Cameron's movies, i was kinda excited, but then i kinda forgot about, as many time has **** i went to movie theater with a bit of skepticism, because many recent post apocalyptic blockbusters have bombed and were kinda messy. But "Alita: Battle Angel" has surprised me in very positive way. It has good story (i haven't seen nor heard about material it is based on), amazing visuals, solid acting but the biggest star was Alita herself. The performance and visual effects we simply amazing. Movie could have flopped if the main character wasn't interesting, but this character fortunately glued to the whole movie. This character was simply amazing - couldn't take my eyes of screen. There are also spectacular action sequences. and while the story itself kinda was hit and miss at the time (especially so so love plot), the whole experience left kinda wanting for more, especially when at the end we got a glimpse on a main villain which was a good surprise for me.Overall, "Alita: Battle Angel" is big and fun entertainment. It might appeal not for everyone taste, but this movie was done so well that it left wanting for more. A very pleasant surprise.

The mix of cyberpunk and Japanese culture creates an excellent setting, a film different from the others. The story is developed in detail and the characters are properly characterized.

Loved every minute of it. I never watch a film more than once but this 1 I watch multiple times. I am still hoping the sequel will come.

I was really surprised at quite how much I enjoyed this film. Initially I was put off by the CGI character design but that was very quickly forgotten as I was so invested in the story that I didn’t even think about it. In fact, I even liked Alita’s distinctive design. The massive strong points are the excellent casting and the characters, they are really engaging and charismatic. The action scenes are exciting with great fight choreography. The writing and direction are genuinely brilliant. The world feels real and fully realised. The music, sound design, everything is really high quality and cohesive. There is a lot of CGI but it is some of the best I have ever seen so I actually liked it. A lot. There are obvious Mortal Engines (2018) comparisons but honestly these two films are not in the same league. Highly recommended.

This movie would have been an easy 9/10 for me, but the cringe guy love interest fetish of hollywood or adjacent producers brings it down to a 6 for me. Can someone explain to me why it is so necessary to have a topless guy in every damn movie? What is wrong with them? In a goddamn movie about a cyborg even... very telling of this industry. Other than that, the movie is brilliant. Very sublte face animations bring alita to life. Great action scenes which feel impactful. I am very sad that some deg. writer or producer forced his fetish into the otherwise great movie.

From my point of view this film is a science fiction masterpiece with a truly beautiful and futuristic plot and very good special effects. In this film everything is perfect from the setting to the design of the characters and therefore I believe it deserves excellent ratings if it weren't for the ending which is slightly rushed and above all it is not a real ending because it leaves the avenues wide open for a sequel that if If it weren't there it would be a real shame. So in conclusion the film is beautiful and really worth seeing if you are a fan of science fiction.

Good CGI, but not much else. This is the condensed, Hollywood version of Gunnm/ABA, where villains lack nuance and the main characters lose a generous dollop of their flaws. Add a pinch of new unnecessary characters, a glazing of forced relatability that distorts the characters personality into becoming your usual blockbuster protagonists, and it synthesises into a movie which loses most of the gritty, cruel setting the manga unfurls in. This movie lacks what made the manga a masterpiece, trying too hard to appeal to a younger audience, ultimately resulting in the dull blockbuster you’ve seen a hundred times over under different names.Might be a good way to get new people into the original material (brace yourself for much more blood and gore, harsh truths, philosophy, and character complexity). I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone who already loves the source material, unless you have nothing better to do that night (or want to forge your own opinion).I understand how it became a box-office hit though, it was designed for it. Felt like I was watching 60% Avatar, 20% Gunnm (thanks to its addled yet recognisable storyline and landmarks) and 20% [your average marvel movie]. It’s an expectedly decent yet tasteless blockbuster set in an alternate universe born of a worn-out recipe from south California.

Incredibly good adaptation of the Manga. Loved every second and Alita’s CGI face was made flawlessly. I wasn’t expecting anything less from Mr.Cameron.

I know films are mostly subjective, but I do not understand the high user score for this film. It's not the worst film I've seen, but it's the worst in awhile. Good: SFX at times was pretty good and some cool action sequences. Bad: Sloppy movie making/storytelling, cliched scenarios and scenes, questionable casting/acting for some, poor uncanny valley/green screen FX in certain parts, and so on. Let me give you a mostly spoiler free example so as to not be confused for a troll or "hater." There's a scene where the good guy takes a very high valued weapon away from the bad guy. Then the good guy drops said weapon in front of the bad guy during some dialogue for no reason. The bad guy picks it up and uses the weapon. I could go into more detail with this scene and many others, but this movie is plagued with them. Add that to someone other complaints and you get a really, comical, but not intended to be comical, sloppy movie that I think won people over with action rather than ****, even with consideration that it's "blockbuster" or "popcorn flick."

One of the best movies I have ever seen. I honestly don't know what movie the critics were watching but Alita: Battle Angel is an amazing movie, brought to life not only by Rosa Salazar and the other stars but by Robert Rodreguez, James Cameron and the entire VFX team. Very few movies deserve a sequel as much as Alita.

Alita is a respectable yet surface level adaptation of the Japanese manga. It bypasses potential weightier themes for more straightforward action. Still, it's exciting action, with exceptional visual effects and a really strong lead in Rosa Salazar as Alita. However, her co-star is unfortunately miscast, and the dialogue is very simplistic. Furthermore, the doll-like CG eyes on Salazar is unnecessary at best, distracting at worst, and misses the point of the anime-like look it's trying to simulate.

I really would love to see a sequel. This movie is amazing, the ALITA character is very human.. much more than Captain Marvel and many others. ALITA 2, please!!!

Big eyed fighting girl in the uncanny valley city of the future. There's a much more interesting backstory hinted at, but much like the world building it isn't explored in any satisfying way. Instead we get robot wars fistfights and a cringe love story between a human being and some spare parts in the shape of a pre-pubescent girl. I haven't been this creeped out since I watched the love scenes between a human and an insect in "Bee movie". There's a weird assortment of grotesque cyborgs (reminding me of the movie A.I.) a futuristic sport which reminds me of rollerball, and an evil overlord in the sky city. One huge let down with this movie is there isn't a proper conclusion; some underling bad guys get their comeuppance but the main antagonist is left for a sequel that will never happen.

Gosh dang it I love this movie! It's the first act **** story, but it's still very good. I hope they make a sequel. Here's my review from 2019: I really enjoyed this film, the visual effects were great! And the action sequences were amazing. What we have here, Ladies and Gentlemen, is yet another divisive film. Where - like Top Gun - the critics are extremely mixed while the fans enjoy the over loving h*** out of it. It’s a bit cliche, the romance between Alita and Hugo, but it really never bothered me. I think Hugo genuinely cared about Alita, and she is too naive of how dangerous the world really is which I found both frustrating at times as well as endearing. Go see it if you haven’t already, I guarantee it doesn’t deserve the heavy bouts of criticisms it’s receiving by critics. Also... there’s a culture war between this film and another marvel film [Captain Marvel] - pay no attention to that. Let this film speak on its own merit, you’ll know If you like it or not when you see it.

I cannot believe the critics gave such low scores to this movie. I saw it on the second weekend of its release in theaters and I was absolutely blown away. The movie looks and feels just like a live-action anime. I was unsure about this movie when I first saw the trailer but after I did a little research I discovered that it was adapted from an old anime/manga, so that was a huge selling point for me. As a huge fan of anime I am thoroughly impressed. This is literally the best live-action adaptation of any anime property, period. The bar was already set pretty low after recent epic failures such as Ghost In The Shell and Netflix's Death Note, which both utterly annihilated the source material they were adapted from. This made me more than skeptical of Alita: Battle Angel but the movie ended up blowing my expectations out of the water. I can understand now why the critic average is so low on this film which is certainly going to become a cult classic. Anime/manga stories are deep and complicated with many intersecting plot-lines, and a lot of bizarre and abstract ideas. Alita: Battle Angel strikes this chord perfectly with a stunning adaptation that remains faithful to its canon in almost every aspect. I watched the anime episodes after seeing the movie and I was almost shocked at Robert Rodriguez's and James Cameron's attention to detail. They really didn't want to disappoint fans of anime/manga. The problem is this type of film might be too much for the average critic or moviegoer. This is not a Marvel movie. You will have to actually think about what's happening, and there are some profound and even disturbing ideas presented. That's what anime/manga is known for. It's really sad that this under-appreciated gem would become lost in the influx of superhero films that dominate the box office. They took a huge gamble with a hefty budget on this film and it probably will not generate the revenue that studio bigwigs were hoping for. I'm hoping that word of mouth can boost support for this awesome sci-fi extravaganza because this is what both Hollywood and anime has needed. The film ended on a major cliffhanger and I would really like to see the story continued.

I'm a fan - straight up. There's a build up in tension as the story develops, and as Alita develops and realises who she is. The 'Bad guy' needs some work, but the action scenes are off the charts. Great show, great story that deserves to be developed further!

The critics all have their heads up their !@#$^^. It really shows you how much of a hive-mind things can get to. Here's the thing about Alita Battle Angel. It doesn't try to do too much. It doesn't try to throw in too many characters. It doesn't try to throw in confusing plot twists that fall apart when you really thing of them. It simply tells a story in a straightforward linear manner. There is character development. A narrative hook and arc. A climax and a conclusion. I learned those story telling elements in MIDDLE SCHOOL. Yet somehow hollywood has forgotten the basics of storytelling and the investors/producers are panicked in to a position of always PUSHING for more more more until we're left with mutated messes of what movies should be. Let that happen long enough, and people become brainwashed, accustomed to the new-normal. Even the critics. And that's how we got here. Is Alita BA the best movie I've ever seen, no. Is all of the above still true? 100%.

"Alita Battle Angel" is a very nice looking piece of sci-fi. The script is based on a Japanese manga/anime story, but eventually, the plot was quite engaging. The actors did a good job, however, we could be expecting a bit more from such a great actor as Christoph Waltz is. Although the picture was stunningly amazing, it would be better the CGI was more "hidden" and blent with physical props. Overall I can truly recommend this film to everyone. It was worth spending 2 hours watching it and I would come back to rewatch it in the future. My opinion is based on the UHD Blu-ray release I bought.

This is a masterpiece of modern cinema.... I do not know what kind of short circuit went through the half-empty heads of the critics to give this movie such a low score. The audience loved it, the setup, masterful exposition and story perfectly balanced in terms of wow factor, loss and appeal. I guess the critics just had a QUATA of movies needed to be trash-mouthed, and since Disney didn't have their finger in it yet it was pa prime target to be bullied.

Decent movie. Did a good job at setting up future society/world. The characters were pretty bleh and the story was generic plot you've seen a thousand times just told in a different setting. Interestingly the worst of the cg seemed to be the main character. No explanation or acknowledgement of why every one else in the movie had a human face except for her.
