Blue Beetle

I really wanted to like this movie as I love the newer Blue Beetle and I'm all for a little diversity in media. However, this is probably one of the worst DC films....just above Shazam 2. It overly generic, cliched, and just downright silly at times (not in a good way). It honestly felt like those movies in the 90s/2000s that were small budget action/scifi flicks about an alien or radioactive spiders or something along those lines. I don't think I would mind seeing this character and/or actor in the new DCU ....but only if they did a soft reboot and cut out this movie.

So, this movie is not quite a 10, but I’m rounding up to counteract the boot lickers who call everything with a woman “woke.” I guess these “alpha” males want more shirtless, buff men movies and be told to like them. Anyway, it’s a solid 8.5/9. Very similar in quality to the Superman movie that precedes it. This movie looses a few points for doing some film cliches as well as some overdone “Gunn like” scenes (I know he didn’t write or direct this movie. But I give it some kudos for having a bland villain, which means the story was about her and not the villain for once as well as a really surprising ending that most superhero movies don’t have/use. Solid flick that I’m seeing again with a buddy of mine.

9.5 for a Masters fan, 8 for just you’re regular movie goer. Let’s start with the higher score…this is how you treat a beloved franchise. Clever explanations, true to life characterizations, fun action, quirkiness, cameos, meta humor, …all of the above. I WISH Transformers would’ve been like this but instead we got the Bay catastrophes. My only small gripes is that it could’ve been edit just a tad and also the humor was a bit predictable but again, self aware (aka Deadpool). If you’re not a Masters fan, I could see how you wouldn’t be invested as much in the characters and obviously not geek out for on a lot of the other elements as well. But, as far as action/superhero movies go, this is better than most. I was on the fence about buying the sword of power movie tie in…that thing is going on my wall now.

First off, this isn't as bad as the money it didn't make or the critics. It's probably the third best (or tied for second) crow film after the original and its sequel. With Crow 3 and 4 bringing up the rear by a long shot. I saw one review state that they spent too much time on the relationship, and I agree with that on premise, but the movie starts with them not being together, so you had to establish that. It's a bit predictable and final climax (at the opera) was a bit convenient. Anyway, I'd watch it again if it was on or someone else wanted to watch it, but I wouldn't watch it again myself.

I know films are mostly subjective, but I do not understand the high user score for this film. It's not the worst film I've seen, but it's the worst in awhile. Good: SFX at times was pretty good and some cool action sequences. Bad: Sloppy movie making/storytelling, cliched scenarios and scenes, questionable casting/acting for some, poor uncanny valley/green screen FX in certain parts, and so on. Let me give you a mostly spoiler free example so as to not be confused for a troll or "hater." There's a scene where the good guy takes a very high valued weapon away from the bad guy. Then the good guy drops said weapon in front of the bad guy during some dialogue for no reason. The bad guy picks it up and uses the weapon. I could go into more detail with this scene and many others, but this movie is plagued with them. Add that to someone other complaints and you get a really, comical, but not intended to be comical, sloppy movie that I think won people over with action rather than ****, even with consideration that it's "blockbuster" or "popcorn flick."

A bit better than I thought it would be, but also exactly what I thought it would be....filled with cliches, nonsensical moments, contradictions, and forgetable-ness. Better than Venom 2 and maaaaybe Venom 1 (but at lease equal). Sony needs to give Marvel the Spider-man characters back ASAP.

A "7" as in a "C" in school. This movie had some cool moments but was ultimately dragged down by tone issues (w/ too much humor), as well as overall poor choices in story and direction. I called it the best of Marvel's worst movies.

First of all, anyone who says this film is less than a 4 is being 100% disingenuous (probably because of the LGBTQ, which is a very small part of the film.) This Pixar film is easily one of the top 5 I've seen, and I've seen all of them except for Soul. Maybe top 3. Let's start with the good. It's a beautiful film with great direction and the pacing was great. Now the **** was a little predictable knowing who the villain was going to be and the villain changing his tune. But other than that, I really enjoyed it. Lastly, I guess some people were upset that Tim Allen wasn't Buzz. This is completely idiotic since in reality most talking toys don't have the actual voice of the actor. Chris Evans has a very "Buzz" voice and it worked well. Other than that, haters gonna hate.

Such a disappointing film and probably one of if not the worst MCU films (looking at you IM3). Raimi’s direction did feel refreshing as a larger part of the MCU but not enough to override the constant cliches, conveniences, and just plain stupid actions of the characters. A small example of this is a scene I’ll describe in an analogy to keep it spoiler free. There’s a bad guy robbing a store. The clerk behind the counter tells the bad guy the other clerk is armed. The robber proceeds to shoot the other clerk. Why would you ever tell the bad guy who was armed? Stuff like this happens constantly in the film. Other complaints is that the villain was too powerful, America Chavez was heavily underutilized, the CGI seemed off (jarringly so) and unnecessary in places, and so on. C-/D+

Worse than the first movie. Riddled with cliches, convenient story telling and miss-the-mark humor. I could write a novel about the poor choices made in this film, but I will say the final battle was pretty epic and Carnage's look and feel was spot on.

Near perfect superhero flick. Better than 80%-90% of all the Marvel and DC flicks combined. A gritty, realistic and intelligent film. Some small gripes (the biggest being the Riddler is a little too far from his core character), but nothing that would lower the films rating significantly. Highly recommend.

Score: 9.5 Damn near perfect film. Funny in a witty, sometimes dark, intelligent way (ala Futurama). It's like an Idiocracy for 2021, yet with a different style of humor. I can definitely see hate brigades lowering the score for this film, but that would be par for the course for anything they don't agree with. Now, I know this film is allegedly an analogy for climate change, but I largely ignored that and focused on the true plot focusing on the ELE comet. The movie worked and it worked well. Great film overall.

Better than average Marvel flick. I thought it only suffered from two issues. 1) It's about 7-12 minutes too long. This wasn't the worst thing and I'd rather have a movie be a bit too long with room to breathe rather than try to cram everything in. 2) The Deviants looked like generic CGI that would fit better in a summer blockbuster alien flick rather than a usually more thought out Marvel movie. But again, nothing major.

Marvel makes another "B" grade movie, which is by no means an insult. However, I couldn't help shake the feeling that I had seen this Marvel movie before. In other words, these films are becoming formulaic, especially since I've seen every one of them. Combine that with the new shows and I wonder if they're starting to get too saturated. This film and one medium flaw and a handful of small flaws in my opinion, but nothing major. The medium flaw was a character's motive three quarters into the film and some of the smaller issues was overreliance and sometimes questionable CGI (reminded me of Black Panther's not so good CGI in parts). Also, it was pretty predictable if you've seen a ton of movies over your lifetime, but again, it's a superhero flick. It dragged a smidge in Act 3 as well. On the positives, it didn't rely on a bunch of clichés in addition to the action/martial arts being top notch. The characters were likeable and world building was solid. IMO Marvel makes about 15% "A" films, 70% "B" films, and 15% "C" films. This can be thrown in with the majority.

Only one major problem with this film and one small gripe. The major issue was that Peacemaker didn't smash the item (trying to stay spoiler free) and then the plot continue on based on that fact. The smaller issue was the gore. I don't have a problem with gore, but like many things in life, moderation and timing is key. Gunn seemed to use it more freely which watered it down and made it less "cool." Other than that, it was refreshing. Better than the other recent superhero flick, Shang Chi (which is also good but just a little less so).

A "6" is about the lowest anyone could go for this movie. I think it's much higher than that though. It's very similar to Rogue One in the sense that it gives more explanation of different characters and their backstories. The acting, action, and plot were all good. As a labeled "movie snob" by my wife and friends, I had a hard time finding anything wrong with this film. The only reason I didn't give it a 10 was because it didn't leave me with a "you gotta see this movie" feeling, which makes sense since Star Wars is a very specific viewing audience.

Maybe my expectations were low, but this movie exceeded my expectations. I kept checking my watch to see how much time was left for them to screw it up. They never did. This movie is better than at least half of the Marvel movies if not 3/4. I feel DC is more criticized than Marvel, BvS had some issues but was pretty solid, where as bombs like Iron Man 3 and Ultron get a free pass. Well, DC did it this time. No doubt. I've heard some complaints about the CGI (I don't really see it as being any worse than Star Wars TFA) and pacing (I actually thought the pacing was fantastic not only in terms of action but the development of characters). I never see movies twice in the theater and I'm considering seeing this one again. Solid. A.

Having two kids, it's hard to get out of the house. But I had to see this film being the superhero nerd that I am and especially with all the discussion surrounding **** like most things in life, the hype doesn't live up to expectations. I don't mean the hype of BvS, I mean the hype that the media used to get you to click on their pages with headlines like "Critics Slam BvS". There's nothing significantly wrong with this film. It's entertaining, feels realistic, paced well, and not dumbed down. I could see ratings in the 7-9 range being the most accurate. I decided on a 9 since 8.5 isn't an option. There's little things here and there that are a little silly (a blinking location tracker for instance that you wouldn't want to blink if you're trying to keep it hidden from the bad guys and so on) but again, nothing too out of sorts. It did take me awhile to warm up to Jesse's portrayal of Lex, but the movie built his character up as the film went on with little phrases that were easy to miss, yet made his character much more believable. I was also worried about any Lex being in another Superman film, but this style of Lex (almost like Ledger's Joker) was much more cruel, conniving, and brilliant. He was much more of a real adversary to Superman than Kevin Spacey ever was. Anyway, I am pumped about the DC universe and even though I stopped buying Blu Rays a long time ago, I am purchasing this film. Lastly, I will say that one possible divisive part of the movie (that I enjoy but could see turning off casual viewers) was that the easter eggs (if that's what you want to call them) weren't just little things in the background or little verbal quips, they were more direct and up front, which could confuse those who don't know the DC universe and its famous stories over the years. But again, being a superhero nerd, I thought that part of the film was awesome and felt like someone was finally making a movie for me.
