The Gorge10

I loved it. It had all the fun beats of an action thriller, plus a romance that felt genuine. The cinematography was better than most, and some shots were quite well done in my opinion. Acting and dialog was solid throughout. The plot was outlandish, but semi-plausible. Much more believable than most movies that everyone "gives a pass" to. Go into it blind, and just enjoy it for what it is, not what you expect or want it to be, and you'll have fun. I see the critics are rating it lower than the public. Critics simply don't have the zeitgeist on cinema culture all the time.

Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire6
Dec 24, 2023
TLDR: It's something to watch. This film I'm sure is any easy target for critique, mostly due to it's poor writing, dialog and acting. Three important things! And, I'll say, it does deserve the critique. I don't see how people get paid to write some of the stuff I see in movies. Rebel Moon is one of those movies that you can see being incredible in some alternate universe. If different people were in charge. But, in this universe, it kinds ****. Still though, it does have value. And in between bad scenes or ridiculous plot points, I found myself enjoying it. Course, I am a **** for anything sci-fi. The CGI is passable, and the ship, environment and alien creature design was pretty fun and unique. It is more watchable and more fun that the recent Star Wars: Ahsoka. Man that show was dull. Overall, 6/10. And yes I look forward to the next installment.

The Tomorrow War1

The worst movie I've seen in years. It's just a string of mediocre action barely held together by bad acting, bad dialog and tattered scraps of a plot. Morons will like it.

Alita: Battle Angel8
Feb 20, 2021
The critics all have their heads up their !@#$^^. It really shows you how much of a hive-mind things can get to. Here's the thing about Alita Battle Angel. It doesn't try to do too much. It doesn't try to throw in too many characters. It doesn't try to throw in confusing plot twists that fall apart when you really thing of them. It simply tells a story in a straightforward linear manner. There is character development. A narrative hook and arc. A climax and a conclusion. I learned those story telling elements in MIDDLE SCHOOL. Yet somehow hollywood has forgotten the basics of storytelling and the investors/producers are panicked in to a position of always PUSHING for more more more until we're left with mutated messes of what movies should be. Let that happen long enough, and people become brainwashed, accustomed to the new-normal. Even the critics. And that's how we got here. Is Alita BA the best movie I've ever seen, no. Is all of the above still true? 100%.

Love and Monsters3

If you're someone who can't stand watching characters think and behave like idiots, then you won't like this movie at all. That's my biggest gripe. The main character here is just written so brick stupid he becomes un-relatable. I guess that's intentional, part of the charm. I just didn't buy into it. It's the type of movie that under a few different writers, a different director and maybe different casting could have been a real jem. Instead it's a token b movie.

The Devil All the Time3
Sep 19, 2020
A well shot film with great acting, but it's not enough. The film left me depressed, failing to deliver sense or meaning beyond the plain surface level takeaway. I judge films by how much I could recommend them, and how much fun I had watching them. I can't recommend this movie, and while I enjoyed the performances, I don't relish in the visual portrayal of "evil exists". The narrative just meandered from here to there until the credits. Blah.

The Dark Knight Rises1

This movie has it all! Oddly bad acting. Plot holes. Dull and silly action. Weird sound design. Forced dialog. One of my least favorite Batman movies.

Extraction9
Apr 25, 2020
Extraction really clicked for me. It's a solid action flick. Don't watch it for the plot, as it's quite basic. It's a story that's been told before. The choreography, camera work, stunts and action however are top notch. Better than most Bond movies. Anyone who can't see this needs to re-watch some of these scenes in Extraction. We've got long single-shot (seemingly)scenes with incredible camera work, flying impossibly in all directions while the action is non stop and thrilling. I've seen COUNTLESS tough-guy movies just like this that are of a much poorer caliber. Extraction is solid film-making and a fun ride. The ending didn't really satisfy me though. There's no message or theme to walk away with. The older I get the more convinced that most critics and 40% of the public are full of #$@%. And hey, whatever, that's fine. No skin off my back. I'm just glad I have my own taste and can form my own opinions without looking to others or the status quo for direction. So many people don't have that. So I'm lucky, I guess.

Underwater8
Apr 18, 2020
Oh great. Another Alien underwater clone. Ok, I'll watch it. But, wait a minute.. What's this? Good acting? Snappy dialog? Surprisingly fresh and well done art direction and sets? It's a great feeling to expect the usual crap and be surprised, and that's what happened here for me. Right from the action filled opening scene, the movie ticks along at an engaging pace. Instead of groaning at cliched dialog and messy plot holes I found myself enjoying and savoring each scene. What makes it impressive is the very fact that it IS a cliche movie, yet the director Leigh Whannell treats it seriously, as do the actors and apparently everyone else who worked on it. It's like they challenged themselves to take an existing aesthetic and push it further. And to any lover of these genres and sci-fi in general, I feel it shines through. I lament that many viewers will lazily grasp at surface level conclusions and miss the solid filmmaking seen here. Halfway through it struck me that the story is a story that has been told since we took to the seas. Over and over. A fable. It's MEANT to be re-told, in a way. This is just the latest iteration. A tale of caution to beware the gods of the deep. So sure, expect a cliche. Also expect a fun and thrilling popcorn flick. But try to leave your judgements behind and just enjoy it for what it is. I bet you'll have fun. I fully expect this film to be a sleeper hit!

Joker3
Nov 11, 2019
Yes, Joaquin Phoenix is a great actor. Also, the direction and cinematography in this films is very good. But what's the takeaway here? The Joker is crazy. Yeah, we know. We knew that already. Joaquin Phoenix is a good actor? Yeah we knew that also. If anything, it's an essay on mental illness. At a time when we need more compassion and resources towards mental illness, the film shocks the viewer in to out-right fearing it. Sure, maybe that's not the intention, but that's the result. Or maybe it's just a movie about a comic book character and I shouldn't take it so literally. Either way, it's not something I'd recommend to people, and I won't watch it again. In the end, it's just not fun. Go watch one of the many other (superior) Joaquin Phoenix films instead.

The Thing9
Nov 19, 2018
An exciting ride from start to finish, The Thing is in my opinion a classic of the genre. The traditional effects will shock you, and still hold up today, outperforming much of the CGI stuff we currently get. The tension of being trapped with no-where to go stays with you for the whole film, while the uncertainty of not knowing who you can trust just adds to the paranoia.

Tomb Raider2
Jun 1, 2018
It starts out strong, with good character building. I had high hopes at first. But as soon as they get to the island, it flips on you and turns in to "generic bad action movie". The pacing gets all wonky, the plot turns to mush, character's motivations are uncertain and action sequences become ridiculous. It's too bad, I wanted to like it, as I like Tomb Raider in general. In the end to me it just felt like a rushed out origin story so they can reboot the franchise... again. Oh, and there's scenes where they clearly are making callbacks to moments in the games. Which felt odd. I like the games, but I expect more from the movies, not a re-enacted game. Member that one time in that one game?? Yeah, I member! I'd rather have fresh new scripts than member berries, thanks!

Kingsman: The Golden Circle1
Dec 2, 2017
This movie is garbage. What it proposes as wit and fun action is nothing but dull dialog and overdone dumbed-down violence. It's the type of movie that appeals to a certain type of person. The loud talking, rude person being an ass in the theater, yeah, that's the type. And finally, it's anti drug message is outdated and another spit in the eye of any intelligent film viewer, or human being. "Drugs are bad m'kay?" Oh, wait, but alcohol is perfectly fine in any occasion! Yeah, you'll need a drink or two to suffer through this one.

Don't Breathe2

Member horror movies? Yeah I member! (Southpark) In other words, what we've got here is just all cliche here with no real substance. No character development starts us off with not caring about anyone in the film. The "twist" is that the villain is blind. I do admit, exploring the concept is interesting, but in the end it felt more like a flimsy gimmick. I found it pretty hard to be afraid of the blind man, even when he had a gun. And I guess it's tradition, but the false ending after false ending really wore on me as well. The movie just isn't what some reviewers think it is. I feel like there's this skewing of perspective in the perception of movies these days. It's like no-one knows what a good movie is anymore. And if anything simply "doesn't ****" then it's given top scores. Our hyperbolic knee-jerk society can't seem to think critically about anything. Or forgets too quickly. Anyway, skip it. Go watch The Witch or something.

The Nice Guys1
Jul 10, 2016
Absolutely horrible. Set it in the "fun" 70's, make Ryan Gosling an bumbling idiot, make Russel Crow fat and add a wacky plot with fun hi-jinks. A recipe for success right? Wrong. Clearly the result of too many writers or too much clueless producer influence, this movie is flat out horrible. The plot is Over-written and full of logic holes. You stop caring right about the same time you get sick of the dialog and half-assed musical score. As for the dialog, for a movie that relies on wit, this movie has almost none. On top of that, the involvement of the kids in the sex and violence is unsettling. I actually love a good detective comedy/thriller/drama but this has to be one of the worst ever made. One good thing though, it can tell you who the idiots in real life are. Just ask them if they loved the film.

SPECTRE3
Jan 14, 2016
Wait, am I watching a bad Roger Moore era remake? Are we really back to the comedic stunts and unwitty wit? The film rambles on from one cliche to another making you feel like you're watching a Bond film you've seen before. I think they're just milking the Daniel Crag "formula" while they can. Scene after scene falls flat due to either bad acting, bad timing in direction or bad music. Sorry. Wait for the next one.

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens9
Dec 26, 2015
JJ Abrams successfully pulled off a huge task. Reboot the Star Wars legend. And in my opinion, he pulled it off. The film exists as a sort of primer to a whole new set of Star Wars films. By recognizing the past, and setting the stage for the future, I don't see how this film could have gone any other direction that how it did. After suffering through Lucas' prequels, this new film seems brilliant by comparison. The effects and art direction are spot on and just what the doctor ordered. You have to give JJ credit for doing minimal CGI on alien characters and creatures. I for one really appreciate that. The acting falters in a few points, but not in the new main characters. All the leads are strong and play their parts well. Of course it's not perfect, and flaws can be found if one looks for them. But those that rate TFA poorly are either looking for attention, indignant ulta-fans or simply trolls. It's a solid flick and the best star wars we've had in a long time. Just don't let the hype ruin it and go in to it with a level head. Have fun!

The Ridiculous 68
Dec 21, 2015
A certain type of movie needs to exist. It's the good bad movie. Or in other words, bad movies that you end up loving. In the first half hour of the movie, I thought I was in for another Adam Sandler bomb. But lo and behold somewhere in the middle it won me over. Sure the jokes are lowbrow and crude, but the point is what else is doing this type of humor now? Sometimes you just want to chuckle along with the good natured idiots in the film and go along for the ride. By the end you realize that the writing is not half bad and the plot ties itself up nice and tidy. That's more than can be said for some major blockbuster films out there! Good job Sandler and crew for pulling off what I predict will be a cult classic in several years. It's good to see some of the old faces. Plus there's surprise cameos. Vanilla Ice is actually pretty funny. Just grab a beer, fire up a joint, put grin on your face, expect crude jokes and have fun! And to all the "real critics" out there on their mountain of hubris, too "proud" to do anything but dismiss this flick, well, have fun being a grumpy ass!

World War Z9
Sep 12, 2013
First off, I did not read the book. It seems that most people who have, hated the movie. Me? I went in to it thinking it would be just like the rest of the zombie flicks, and I already have zombie burnout. But, low and behold Pitt fits the role perfectly, a baddass, but also an every-man who takes us through both well done suspense and outrageous action. The plot has a couple weak spots, yes, but as far as big action movie plots these days go, it's above average, and not a total slap in the face like many movies are. It's a popcorn munching thrill ride, and one of the better "overall experience" movies I've seen all year. That said, don't expect too much, because that always ruins it lol.

The World's End2
Sep 12, 2013
Wow, metacritic, letting me down. This film was a slow trudge through a half baked plot, only interrupted by a meager supply of chuckles. Oh but... it's the guy, from that movie, and we ALL liked that, remember? It did have it's moments. The action segments have some great choreography, which spices things up. And some jokes hit home. But overall, unfortunately, it just doesn't add up to be the swashbuckling buddy movie it sets out to be. Time will tell.

Fast & Furious 62
Jul 24, 2013
Rehashed, Cliche, tired and tiring. The plot begs you to just shut up and shut off your brain. I tried. I tried hard to like it. I like big dumb action movies. But the stunts are mostly cgi, the characters are wooden and the plot is riddled with holes. Just skip it. Oh, unless you're a brain dead automaton, then it's for you.

Prometheus1
Jul 1, 2012
A victim of many things, including poor screen writing and rampant fan-boy-ism and hype, Prometheus fails to live up to much of anything. Many people have the name Ridley Scott on their lips, but, the blame can't really be attributed to him in this case, as the real problem is with the plot. It REEKS of too many fingers in the pie, too many half assed ideas pasted together to form a "story" that tries to be on one hand, an intellectual film and on the other an extension of the now mundane space monster movie, and fails to deliver on either account. With too many plot holes to list, mediocre casting / acting and a hollow ending, it's just not worth it.
