Roberts populates convincingly elaborate underwater sets with a suitably appealing cast for a claustrophobic adventure that manages to deliver some real terror before it somewhat inevitably levels up into absurdity.

The film more or less keeps things efficiently moving, wringing white-knuckle tension less through jump scares than from the darkness of a seemingly infinite void.

We Got This Covered
47 Meters Down is still the alpha of this franchise pack, but Uncaged's stealth "slasher but with sharks" structure is an approved and entertaining surprise.

Uncaged improves on the first film only with its ending: This one boasts a modestly effective twist rather than a truly moronic one. Encouraging, but not nearly enough to justify a third trip down this 47-meter well.

There are small spurts of creativity ... but everything else about the production feels more watered down than the landscape our four interchangeable leads find themselves flailing about in.

A moment, please, to appreciate that 47 Meters Down: Uncaged contains a landmark in shark attack cinema (which is a genre, don't question me). Finally, a film has dethroned Deep Blue Sea for the title of "dumbest and most hilarious chomp-chomp moment."

The sharks are disappointingly not scary but they’re interesting-looking with their plastic torpedo heads and serrated-saw smiles. When they leap out of the dark to dismember bodies, they bloody the waters in swirling lava lamp patterns that feel almost peaceful. Or perhaps I’m just trying to find a nicer way to say dull.

The first film; 47 meters down was a simplistic well executed shark survival film that had enough going for it to be a solid entry into the depths of shark films albeit cliche. This adds more intensity with a faster pace and some more action/scares throughout. Director Johannes Roberts clearly had a bigger budget as he was able to have much better set pieces and expanded settings in the underwater cave ruins and it works very well for the overall story and atmosphere. The actors may not be upper echelon, but they serve their purpose for the story. The colors and visuals are phenomenal and the cgi sharks look a lot better this time around. There are even some unexpected moments you won't see coming that i commend them for attempting. Overall a pretty enjoyable shark film with a terrific original setting concept that amplifies the intensity.

While technically speaking it's a worse movie than it's predecessor, overall, it's a much more enjoyable and entertaining movie. With bad acting performances, average at best CGI effects, the overuse of slow motion and a truly baffling ending, it can definitely be enjoyed as a guilty pleasure.

Johannes Roberts' 47 Meters Down: Uncaged is the sequel to his 2017 film, which received mixed reviews. The sequel takes place in an unexplored and submerged Mayan city where four young girls, Mia, Sasha, Alexa, and Nicole, find themselves in a dangerous situation with hungry sharks. Unlike the first movie, this sequel has nothing to do with the first one, and it would have been better if it were not related to the first one in any way. The characters in the movie are unsympathetic and the movie seems to be an excuse to show young women in bikinis. The visual and visual effects are not noteworthy, and some of the attacks are predictable. The setting of the movie is interesting but it does not lend itself to exciting moments, and it felt like the movie is becoming ridiculous by the end. The movie shot a part of the movie nearby in Basildon, Essex which is a local positive. The sequel does not justify the need for this sequel, and it falls short across the board.

What a stupid movie. Nowhere in the entire story is it believable in any way if you know just a little about sharks or diving. What a waste of time.
