Banner Saga is a fine - but towards the end a bit repetitive - turn-based viking adventure. [Feb 2014]

It's an outstanding start for a trilogy, and one that we can't wait to see to its end. [Issue#145, p.116]

A fantastic combination of fantasy storytelling and RPG tactics. One hell of a debut from Stoic. [Apr 2014, p.62]

Good story, altough confusing with all the different characters and places. Good strategy and gameplay. Nice art and sound. Really tiring to read so much.

The game is unbelievably beautiful in every aspect. It catches you right from the beginning with its art style. Then you meet a pretty cool gameplay. I thought no game would be able to stand next to the HOMM III series in the turn-based strategy genre, and it was an incredibly pleasant surprise to discover such a gem. The game has cool mechanics in fight episodes with good animations, effects, etc. There are really many different very deep characters. They are so well-written that every choice you need to make in one or another situation sends shivers down your back, and you worry about a crucial decision you have to make. Speaking of the latter. There are also many situations throughout your journey where you face different occasions with various characters and whether you want it or not, you are obliged to make tough decisions or even verdicts. This thing is a part of the complex gameplay and a reminder that a leader always faces these kinds of conditions. On top of all these lovely mechanics, the game is covered with a deep story. Right away you find yourself in a world that has lived long before you. There are different races, conflicts, and wars that have happened you need to take into account. Additionally, every frame of the game is an amazing art and narration. Considering that it is the first part of the game with such an intriguing plot, it's not possible to be unimpressed and not be eager to try the next part and discover the story completely.

It sets before itself a brilliant idea and begins to weave unique gameplay with a one-of-a-kind story. While the ending may leave the player wanting more, a tapestry so artfully woven is its own reward.

The Banner Saga is blindingly lovely and arguably just as intriguing to play. Built atop a world that all but demands the attention of travel documentaries, it's epic in the literal sense of the word.

If you’re getting tired of swords and sorcery, or just looking for meaty tactical battles, few RPGs will satisfy you better.

Uno de los mejores videojuegos de combate a turnos a los que he jugado. Una historia trepidante, rápida y muy original, recomendado.

The Banner Saga is an absolutely gorgeous, engrossing RPG that features well-balanced and pleasingly tactical turn-based combat. It's a linear journey, but one that's definitely worth taking.

There are definitely some mechanics to be fixed, namely the monotony of the combat, but I enjoyed my time in this bleak world thoroughly.

Credit then to Stoic for crafting a game experience that makes such gloom palatable, beautiful, and yes, even enjoyable.

For all its flaws and shortcomings, The Banner Saga's ambitions shine through well enough. [March 2014, p.52]

Its stripped down battle system and low production values have a huge impact on the overall quality of Stoics game, a game that has a unique charm but cannot earn a place next to the best "tactics" games whether they are "indie/ kickstarter" projects or not.

Fun game with strong art style. Turn based strategy is engaging and story choices have some appropriate weight to them. Overall story is fairly forgettable but the moment to moment choices and the characters are great. Didn't leave a strong impression.

The games has its strengths and weaknesses, it's a mixed bag. For starters the game drives you to finish it, due to its established story. The story itself is medicore, in both storytelling and soul, The writers forgot the key in roleplaying and storytelling, show not tell. Many parts in the game they tell you how you feel, showing the player a clear sign of developer who are afraid to let go. The consequences for your choices are arbitrary with little information before to help indicate what can bring a better outcome, you are basically rolling dice, rather than thinking. Because the game is linear, they tried to bask the illusion of choice with foolish consequences. The only real choice you have in the game is to play or quit. The characters, locations and enemies have little to tell them apart, this is mostly due to the method of story telling, the game also suffers from too many heroes. Game play mechanics - I am not a big fan of turn base combat, I find it inferior to squad shooters and great strategy game like myth the fallen lords and mount and blade, in comparison to heroes and king bounty, it stands it ground. However recent games such as divinity original sin greatly surpass it in depth and balance. The game fails to encourage you to use 6 squad members, at many times using 3 or 4 is preferable. In summary, the game pushes you to play to end, and play around with it its consequences. But once you finish it there is a good chance you will have a sour taste in your mouth .

After the new XCOM game,, turn based games carved a place in my mind that is why i gave a shot at this this is new IP from a New studio and i dont think i am having fun because of the interface and the core mechanics...i dont think i can handle this game anymore. I am trying my self at normal difficulty but the real difficulty is from the UI. The interface most of the time, does not clearly convey what action you about to make, and you can not reverse the actions even before the turn is complete... The story is supposed to procedural, but sometimes it decides things on your behalf of you. In other words, if there is an event going on somewhere, it decides that you go **** that is how it provides some plot twists... It is very hard to get used to the nature of this game but i dont think it s enjoyable enough to adapt. What i like most is the HP and ATK stats are being same thing. You should not be able to damage some creature critically if you are on the last drip of your HP.
SummaryLive through an epic role-playing Viking saga where your strategic choices directly affect your personal journey. Make allies as you travel with your caravan across this stunning yet harsh landscape. Carefully choose those who will help fight a new threat that jeopardizes an entire civilization.
