A critique of micro purchases has never been as fun as in SuperEpic: The Entertainment War, where we will have to play in a satirical Metroidvania-style game fighting the fascist pigs that control the world.

Really enjoyed my playthrough. Offers something a bit different from the usual metroidvanias.

To succeed as a Metroidvania, a game has to set itself apart from the rest. SuperEpic’s second-screen mini-game approach is not only an innovative concept, it helps underline the satirical conceit the game’s story lays out. Even with its shallow combo-based combat system, there’s plenty here for fans of the genre to enjoy.

Going into it, players might find the humour in SuperEpic a tad too cutting for their taste, but once a few floors have gone by, the laughs start to seep through in almost every aspect, including the way that Regnantcorp employees seem to constantly sleep at their desks and do no work. The tone of the game breaks up how grueling some of the combat can be when faced with a long corridor full of enemies that are incredibly annoying to fight, making for a much more well-balanced experience that feels more than at home on the Nintendo Switch. While it makes a point of poking fun at the state of the games industry, SuperEpic is also a lot of fun to play.

SuperEpic is a good game that shines because of its tongue-in-cheek narrative. Gameplay-wise, it has some solid aspects and some flaws, but overall it’s a title we’ve had fun with.

SuperEpic has nowhere to go after it comes screaming out of the gate. Its engaging initial gameplay never really evolves past button-mashing. Decent sprite work is derailed by environments that are so bland as to defy recollection. Its own commentary on the bereftness of mobile games ends up being a commentary on itself, and leaves you a lonely, wandering shell, questioning your gaming habits, your existence...everything.

SuperEpic: The Entertainment War is a respectable action-platformer that offers satisfying combat and an interesting theme. Overall there is a lot to like here, even if things end up good, not great. The raccoon-llama combo helps for sure!

SuperEpic: The Entertainment War is a charming metroidvania that combines satisfying exploration with a sharp satirical take on the modern games industry. Taking aim at microtransactions, influencer culture and corporate greed, it’s consistently witty, giving the adventure a personality that sets it apart from many of its genre peers. The exploration is the game’s greatest strength. Unlocking new abilities steadily expands the interconnected world, making it rewarding to revisit earlier areas in search of hidden secrets and collectibles. The hand-drawn visuals are full of character, the presentation is polished, and progression strikes an enjoyable balance between exploration, platforming and light combat. Combat is the weakest aspect. While perfectly serviceable, it never develops enough depth to compete with the best metroidvanias, and there are occasional moments where objectives aren’t as clear as they could be. These issues interrupt the flow from time to time but never significantly detract from the overall experience. What stayed with me most was the satire. Its satirical take on the modern games industry remains sharp and entertaining throughout, giving the adventure an identity that helps it stand out from many indie metroidvanias. It’s rare for a game’s humour to stay fresh from beginning to end, but SuperEpic manages exactly that. I spent around 25 hours with the game and would happily recommend it to fans of metroidvanias looking for something with a little more humour and personality than usual. It doesn’t quite reach the genre’s top tier, but it delivers a consistently enjoyable adventure with plenty of charm. A witty, distinctive metroidvania whose clever satire and rewarding exploration make it well worth discovering.

It's a fun Metroidvania with a fun meta story that doesn't bring much new to the table.. It does some clever things using QR codes and your cell phone. It's neat, but it doesn't do much to enhance the overall experience. The game play and combat is fine, but it's really more focused on the humor of the story. It's funny, but it's no Guacamelee. If you've played just about every Metroidvania under the sun (like me) and you want another, this is that.

I'd give this game a higher score, if its wall jump mechanic would be easier to perform and if combat would be more interesting. Due to the former I'm stuck at a precise point on the last floor, making it impossible to me to progress and to see the end of this game. The latter might be a critique towards blind grinding in certain games, which would be totally in the vein of the whole game, so I can overlook that. In the end I'm mitigated on SuperEpic.

It's fast and fluid, it looks really good, but this game is just duller than dishwater. Zero challenge, the room designs are as generic as they get. Boring!
