There is a lot of hype surrounding the Suikoden series and the first entry starts off strong, but not without flaws. This game shoots for the stars and only comes up short in a few areas. I was not able to fully support the decision making of the protagonist at times. The plot is not very compelling and there are too many characters for many of them to get relevant plot developments. I would say this game is overrated but not by a lot. It is a less compelling version of the first lunar. I can tell that the second game is going to be great. This formula is great. The execution was iffy. I am excited to play the second game. I would not replay this one again. Very fun if you love JRPGs. Skip this game if you are experimenting and you are just getting into jrpgs.

Hard to give a perfect ten to anything, but this game deserves it. Especially for the time it was released.

This game, while short, still keeps you engaged all the way through. Characters are awesome and varied enough to where you can overlook the games weaker aspects. I recommend trying to get the best ending for a little surprise.

+ soundtrack fits the atmosphere / scene+ Building your castle is fulfilling+ grinding is fast+ pacing is great / no dead moments+ Characters with character+ Dungeons are mostly short yet unique~ game sometimes feels like there was more too it~ War system is simple and gets easier~ no reason to pay attention to runes~ missable recruits- Combat is largely unfocused / boring- forced to use two characters in the end despite amount of allies- inventory system / equipping is horrid- music in general is rather generic or nonexistant

The game was off to a decent start until about 20-30 minutes in. One character does something cool and interesting - however, it turns into a really idiotic plot segue shortly after. It struck me as such bad writing that I turned the game off then and there. Anything interesting that the game did with party and combat organization isn't going to keep me entertained when there is such an amateur plot hole so early on.
