Stormgate is a strategy game woven from strong multiplayer fabric, shaped by high expectations and unfulfilled promises. Whether it can become the unicorn Tim Morten envisions remains to be seen.
At release, Stormgate is not as extensive as promised, but it is still a much better RTS than it was at the start of Early Access.
Stormgate is both a classic and an innovative RTS which mixes the old and the new, it still needs some work but the foundations are strong.

Game was based on lies and deception. It's a terrible early access corpse that wont ever see a full release. Yes they claim to have "left early access... at Version 0.6 with tons of constant lies and missing features. Ninjaediting their Kickstarter,Astroturfing their community, fake reviews, Generative AI Slop usage. And their CEO posting ALL their communication post launch over Linked In calling their own game dead and that games "need to use more ai" Do NOT play this. Not even as a joke.Horrible game with horrible developers and leaders. The stuff they did would usually be career ending. And yet they talk about "making a new game" while this one isn't even remotely finished. Do not believe their Lies. They wasted phenomenal budget and press attention, they wasted the immense good will of their fans. Just to spit in everyones face with this one

Made by former Starcraft 2 and Warcraft 3 devs, Stormgate enters the RTS world with a familiar feel. Featuring three factions, players quickly build their forces to contest random Stormgates that appear across the map. This results in a battle-centric RTS, but it can also leave players vulnerable to falling behind or being punished for certain play styles.

Real-Time-Shit
There's two sections to this review: Stormgate and Frost Giant Let's start with the more important component: Stormgate Sigh, I really wanted this to be a good game, man. The idea of a more social, cooperative focused RTS is a niche that hasn't been filled beyond StarCraft II's Co-Op's neglected shadow. There was a ripe opportunity for there to be a new addition to the genre that was more casual focused, tailored for co-operative campaigns and taking on a hero based Co-Op mode as a trio rather than just as a team of 2. It sounds so sick. If you are expecting an innovative experience in terms of a "next generation", more social, rich world/story co-op experience, you will be disappointed. There are some fundamental improvements that Stormgate has iterated upon, such as automated control groups, camera hotkeys that are persistent between games, fully customizable hotkeys. There are some quality of life improvements that are commendable. But for me, the game is basically a monetized beta. Co-Op specifically, the mode I was most excited for, has not been updated in nearly a year and is now hidden behind a "Sigma Labs" designation since Stormgate left Steam's Early Access with reportedly only the campaign and 1v1 modes as "1.0 ready". What if you spent $10 on a hero like Aurelanna that has been drastically under powered in comparison to the other heroes? What do you learn about this character from playing her in Co-Op? What if you get tired of the same few maps as an experience, are stuck with an afk teammate, or don't like the averaged out difficulty selection to try and reduce long queue times? The answers to those questions are the same as they were a year ago: wait it out. This extends to Mayhem, the highly hyped 3v3 Hero Mode, or the revamped celestial art, player made maps. Just keep waiting. Here's why that's an issue: Frost Giant themselves. They have had a persistent pattern of messaging that is unclear and unreliable as to what to expect for the future. Their financial wellness is extremely suspect based on public information that is available due to them having run a crowd equity campaign through Indiegogo and Start Engine where retail investors could invest in their company that they valued at $150,000,000 due to their previous work on "Wings of Liberty". Their team, including their CEO and art director, coordinated to do a swathe of fake reviews on Steam prior to Steam Next Fest in January of this year by renaming Frost-monikered testing accounts to names such as "Fluffy". While I said it was unreliable and unclear, it has certainly veered into manipulative and scummy territory, but even if you don't care about any of that, know this: This game is online only and the studio has made no assurances as to the player's long term access to their content. If the servers go down, there is no Stormgate. Purchase content in this game at your own risk since there is very little reassurance as to what Frost Giant Studios may look like in a month, let alone in a year. As I write this, their CEO is in Germany pleading at Gamescon looking for additional investment since their 1.0/0.6/Necrolyte release did not produce enough sales for them to continue development at the same rate as previously. Purchase at your own risk. I don't respect this company because I don't feel like they respect their supporters but can definitely see that there are some of their developers that are skilled at what they do. They have shown that some of their technical ability is commendable. Therefore, I give this game a 2. I used to think it was a 0 or a 1, but it has certainly improved, albeit there is a marathon to go with no guarantee that they will sustain themselves to get there. I don't rate it on promises but as it is currently, and it is a very poor RTS in terms of story, sound, polish, unit balancing, hero balancing, characters, art, level design, AI and AI script events, and features.

As a competitive RTS, Stormgate is what's next. Or at least, I hope it is. It pushes that classic basecraft formula forward with a veteran's eye for what works and what doesn't, and gets me pumped to queue up again right after I finish a match – win or lose – in a way I haven't been since the early days of Wings of Liberty. The campaign has come a long way since the rough state it was in for the Early Access launch, while it still has some rough edges. The road ahead still feels long, and I genuinely hope it has the chance to become everything it wants to be some day. It's already a special game, though, combining the familiar and the fresh into a satisfying RTS experience.

The classic RTS formula is a skirmish of asymmetrical armies on an even playing field. Whether you are playing vs a human or an AI, Stormgate is by far the deepest and most interesting example of an asymmetrical RTS that we have had in over a decade. The versus and skirmish modes greatly reward explorative play, which is the essence of the genre. The map editor in this game allows community creators to make their own custom maps and new game modes- a feature found incredibly rarely in modern RTS. Stormgate's versus mode features a partnership with ****, where scores of replays and build orders of the highest level are available for any player to review, as well as interesting stats, and graphs galore. The only reason my score is not a 10/10 is because although released, the game's development is not fully finished. The lack of polish will be noticeable when navigating the game. But Stormgate is a unicorn game, an absolute banger of an entry into the versus RTS pantheon.

Stormgate’s early access hints at potential, but it’s clear that it’s not yet the revolutionary RTS some might have hoped for. The game shows promise with its gameplay foundation, but there’s still a lot of work needed to refine it. As it stands, it’s a game worth watching, but not one to jump into just yet. [Early Access Score = 30]

At present, Stormgate is a potentially good game that makes a poor first impression. Six missions, only three of which are playable for free, makes neither a good campaign nor a good deal, while the game's most interesting factions are hidden away in the multiplayer, where you need to do a lot of on-the-spot learning to get the most out of them. All that said, I don't think it's a game anybody should write off. Behind its blandifying art style is a very tactically chewy strategy game. If you're a fan of the genre and have friends who are likewise, there's good fun to be had in its 1v1 multiplayer, which I should stress costs nothing to try out. [Early Access Review]

Stormgate has the makings of a great RTS, but it needs a stronger identity of its own in its full release. [Early Access Review]

Unfortunately released in an unfinished state. But the engine and multiplayer are improving. Has some good innovations in the engine and controls. The first single player campaign was ...fine. Just about worth the price but felt rushed and the writing/VA was sometimes disappointing.

The game is lacking in every single way. The content on offer would barely be acceptable for a game that is entering early access. Every single aspect of the game is heavily flawed, no matter if it's the art, graphics, story, balance, pathfinding... everything. There's no a single thing the game actually does well.
