Western is an old-fashioned game about an old-fashioned time, and although it may not possess the swaggering production values or wit of "Red Dead Revolver," it’s a thoroughly guilty pleasure. [March 2005, p.90]

While Samurai Western is a somewhat standard hack-and-slash with a quirky setting, it doesn't hold up for two main reasons: lack of polish and much-needed variety.

The whole concoction makes for one super-stylized, decidedly different action game. [May 2005, p.43]
10
Simply unique concept beside its repetitive and boss so annoying with thick healthbar.
1
The most boring game I've ever played. There's nothing to do but spam frames. It also has a terrible dodge animation and dodge system. I couldn't even understand if it has a story.
4
I found it very repetitive and boring. I really tried to like it, but it was impossible.

Above and beyond any of its imperfections, Samurai Western is a bloody, fast-and-furious hack fest that is amazingly fun to play.

Samurai Western could've been one of the great beat-'em-ups, if it had a little more variety to its gameplay. Special stages, like a train chase or a level spent on horseback, would've been great; so would the ability to pick up new weapons, "Onimusha"-style.

6
Funny concept but dull gameplay in the vein of dynasty/ samura warriors trash.
Graphics still ok but muddy, bosses are tough but each boss can be cheezed ( just force him to stuck between objects or walls and u can kill him through it) ai is nonexistable, gameplay repetitive.
Anyway fun to play sometimes

I don't think it's the idea that you put a swordsman against an army of outlaws in the Old Western period that doesn't work well for Samurai Western. Rather, it seems to be the presentation of it.

If the concept of a samurai in cowboy country is that appealing to you, scrounge up a copy of "Rising Zan: Samurai Gunman" for PSone. Its gameplay, graphics, and camera are by no means better, but at least it embraces the setting for all its worth, and even gives the main character a kick-ass theme song!

Even with the unique setting, the game is way too easy to complete and too repetitive to make it an outstanding title. Although, action aficionados will appreciate it.

Most of what Samurai Western has going for it is a goofy atmosphere derived from jamming the samurai and western parts of the storyline awkwardly together, and piling more ludicrously anachronistic elements on top of the result.

Samurai Western is a mess of a game, one that dangles a fun-looking carrot in front of your nose before bludgeoning your face in with a mallet. [Sept 2005, p.122]

SummaryIt's the American West during the 1800's. The days of pioneers and the Gold Rush are ending, and a transcontinental railway is in place. One day, a lone stranger arrives in a tiny, windswept desert town? His long hair is drawn back in a topknot and he wears strange foreign clothes. A mysterious-looking blade that is neither a knife nor a... Read More
