I thoroughly enjoyed SAMURAI MAIDEN's combat with its wealth of skills and charming cast of lovely ladies. However, it does have its issues, especially if you want to take photos of the characters' panties because you'll end up incredibly disappointed.

Every time you use your partners’ skills, your relationship with them rises. They're pleasantly designed in a way that means you don't have ton rely on them, acting more as stun mechanics. In addition, these attacks help mask the game's numerous frame rate dips. Sadly, these drops, alongside your main character's stiff attacks, make Samurai Maiden's encounters much more frustrating than they should be.

Samurai Maiden is an action title boasting conceptually sound ideas that grievously fall flat due to poor optimization, rigid movement, unnecessarily high enemy numbers, and artificial difficulty by extension. The replayability offered by greater difficulty modes is rendered moot. Granted, exploring the stages for collectibles and platforming can be enjoyable. The cast is pleasing to see converse and bond, too. Still, the lacking narrative and gameplay-related drawbacks significantly hamper the experience. At one point in development, there was a promising time to be had here, but it’s been mired by severe faults.

Samurai Maiden isn't perfect, but it's an enjoyable game with solid combat and some isekai charm thrown in. It has solid voice acting and good soundtrack, but can be repetitive at times, and is short for a single playthrough. On sale, this can be a hidden gem for certain players, though don't expect DMC/Bayonetta levels of replayability or challenge.

(Steam; key purchased through HumbleBundle.) Unplayable; insufferably terrible control setup/scheme, impossible to make sense of how to navigate/progress.

Despite having an original story and setting, many elements of Samurai Maiden bring about a feeling a deja vu. Watching the relationships develop between the four heroes over the backdrop of slaughtering endless legions of the undead feels similar to a few other games. Nevertheless, despite some of the flaws mentioned like the dialogue not being the greatest or combat mechanics being too loose, this is a good execution of the formula. Hacking through the undead soldiers and the more-powerful demons and blobs can devolve into mindless button mashing, but the various assist commands from Tsumugi’s companions keep things from ever getting too stale. Nothing about Samurai Maiden is particularly exceptional, but everything comes together well enough where it’s a still a worthwhile title for fans of the genre.

This is a fun game that gets a lot better once it gets going. The early stages are very short and heavy on VN scenes, and the combat starts off very basic. But as you unlock more moves and start encountering more challenging enemies the gameplay really starts to shine. Controls are very tight and responsive, handling both hectic combat and precision platforming well. Great art direction and character designs make for a mostly nice looking game, but the low resolution and (thankfully rare) framerate dips hurt a little. The music is typical fare and nothing outstanding but the voice acting (Japanese only; no English dub here) is pretty good. All in all it's a very good game with a surprising amount of polish despite its obviously low budget. If you are the type who likes to replay games on various difficulties or seek out hidden unlockables it's worth picking up at full price. Otherwise, wait until it gets a sale.

Devotees of yuri, musou, or anime visual novels might find something to enjoy in Samurai Maiden. Aside from its genre trappings, fans of action RPGs won’t be impressed. The game’s combat is simply too frustrating, repetitive, and janky. Samurai Maiden doesn’t take any chances. The result is an overpriced, low-budget game with tepid combat bound to a collection of familiar genre tropes.

SAMURAI MAIDEN mixes two completely opposite genres (action and visual novel) and fails to excel in either one. It is a weak, boring game with awful graphics, bad music, unresponsive controls and a monotonous story. The character models are very nice and the action is a little pleasing after evolving a lot and unlocking different moves, but it's not worth it.

Another post-woke, fake ecchi game with negligible fan service and annoying censorship. Once again, a prime example of CCP style censorship under the thin veil of moral guardianship. Violent games don't make violent people, pervy games don't make predators. Stop pretending that artistic restriction is protecting anyone.
