Don’t let its somewhat drab exterior fool you, Rolling Gunner is worth a look for genre professionals and up-and-comers alike. Its the kind of game that, despite only being six stages long, I can see myself returning to for a long time coming.

Though there’s a surprisingly large field of competitors on the platform, Rolling Gunner ends up as the best scrolling shooter available on the Switch. While it clearly embraces the traditions of its arcade-oriented predecessors, Koizumi’s work serves as both as a solid introduction to the genre as well as a satisfying deep-dive for veterans.

Challenging as well as mesmerizing arcade action merging classic bullet hell with interesting fresh ideas.

Brilliant game. Screen shots don't do it justice. It really captures the turn of the century pseudo 3d artstyle. Mastering the rolling gun is quite satisfying, and you'll learn more techniques and just get better with it the more you play. The gameplay is very intense, and the enemy waves are clearly designed with your rolling gun in mind as they come from every possible angle. Thankfully the devs understand game design and the edge of the screen flashes red when enemies are incoming. I was worried this would be too much like a twin stick shooter, but its better in every way.

Very enjoyable accessible game with tutorials at the start of runs for beginners. The graphics look nice. The DLC is a bit overpriced in the UK compared to everywhere else though and probably not worth it.There are no new levels or backgrounds just different modes and rules.

The game is the perfect modern shmup and It was the main reason I bought a Switch but unfortunately it runs awfully on the system. The frame rate drops and a lot of distracting slow down occurs during busy moments as a result. I hope it gets a release for other more powerful home consoles in the future.

Directed by ex-Cave dev Daisuke Koizumi, who worked on Deathsmiles 2 and Dondonpachi, amongst other great entries in the genre, Rolling Gunner has pedigree, and it shows; this is one of the most addictive, accessible and downright fun shmups currently available on Nintendo’s system. It plays beautifully, looks amazing and is overall one of the most engaging side-scrolling shmups released in recent memory. Kudos to Mebius for creating an entry in the genre that does so much to welcome newcomers into the fold whilst at the same time offering a blisteringly difficult challenge with plenty of hidden depth to hardened warriors looking for their next shooter addiction.
