Feeling the buzz of Genji’s countering system is the key to enjoying it, making the eastern promise of demanding play feel attainable, if less exotic for those already well-versed in mastering such endeavours. [Sept 2005, p.92]

It seems content to re-tread worn ground without ever pausing to innovate along the way...As a result, Game Republic’s opening gambit is left feeling plod-through tired before the credits have run. [Sept 2005, p.114]

The close quarters combat feels exactly as you'd hope for in a high-quality samurai action game. [Sept 2005, p.85]

It wasn't bad for a PS2 game, although when dodging it did whatever it wanted and it had very high difficulty spikes in the bosses compared to the normal enemies.

Controls and gameplay are geat and it looks and sounds even better. The only matter of taste is probably the very japanese story. The graphics are truly on point here and harmonise perfectly with the fixed camera and the sweet soundtrack. The artstyle is really a must see, do not miss it out. The fighting is simple, but feels really good, especially the time dilating ability. Good for some nostalgic PS2 moments as it is just about 6 hours long and challenging enough, but not too hard. Unfortunately it gets a bit bland towards the end and offers not more than the fighting.

I didn't think it would be this good. The thing that surprised me most in the game is that the mechanics are almost the same as those in Ghost of Tsushima. So, it was inspired by this game. And this mechanic forms the way the game is played. Even though it is easier, especially on bosses, we need to react just in time, like in Sekiro. But like I said, it's much simpler. The game in general is not difficult anyway. But it's better than being unnecessarily difficult. I love the game very much. I had a lot of fun.

No, it's nothing new, but what it does, it does so well that you can't help but be sucked into this world. The action is near-perfect and the balance of visuals to combat to RPG elements is utterly enchanting.

Superior visuals and enjoyable user-friendly combat make this one of the best adventure games on PS2. Onimusha fans will love it for sure. [PSM2]

One of my absolute favorite games, truly a gem. Beautiful sceneries and music give a fresh and lovely environmental experience especially if you're a lover of Japanese traditional culture. Gameplay is overally enjoyable with tight & responsive control, variable movesets for different types of weapon, a neat & cohesive Weapon Forging system, and Kamui - the ultimate test of skills and for me personally the shining feature of this game. Mastering it takes time to practice as the Kamui sequences for some enemies in the game can be seriously unforgiving, and your mastery of the ability will affect the whole level of success in this game. With all that in mind, you will have plenty of fun with the game even after finishing the story the first time, as you face new challenges and explore various items to fill up the Weapon List... In overall, I've had truly a great time playing this game.

Even with the short running time, however, Genji is so well-constructed that anyone partial to sword combat should pay attention.

Much like "Darkwatch," this is a game that you definitely want to play, but you're probably better off not paying for, at least not while it's $40. [Import]

Combat is instantly gratifying, reminiscent of the spectacular fight scenes in the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Simple controls let players concentrate on timing, with extravagant moves unleashed as countermeasures to clumsy enemy advances.

You'll be finished with the main game by the time breakfast is over, although it’s a helluva ride. The lack of satisfactory length or significant replay value hurts what is otherwise an impressive, stylish action romp through ancient Japan, leading to a game not quite worth its weight in yen.

It's a strange and giant leap back to restrictive, basic gaming that becomes joyless rather quickly. Play "Onimusha" instead. [Nov 2005, p.123]

Er good and fun action game for PS2 with some wonderful **** best part of the Mechanic is the reflex killmove you can make but sadly the worst part of it is that in the later part of the games it creates some really intense reflexes. I don't think that modern screen can take.I can't say too much about the game because it's feels so smooth and nice to play it. Just kind **** you can play in one sitting and enjoy so I would recommend it completely if you can find it.
