Fading Afternoon
The excellent OST and nice, retro looking pixel-art are not enough to hide the subpar gameplay and the frustrating difficulty.
Fading Afternoon is a very ambitious game that improves on Technos’ decades-old Kunio-kun formula in almost every way. It’s certainly the most accomplished of Yeo’s works to date, and impressive in its polish. What really shines, though, is the way it expands on its life-simulator elements and those all-important details. It keeps things fresh, interesting, and compelling. Although regularly punctuated by satisfying gangland violence, it’s not a fast game by any means. With its downbeat plotline and melancholic motifs, it’s more an experience to become absorbed in, to be explored and tapped for all its little surprises and diverging paths on subsequent playthroughs. For everything it strives to achieve, beyond anything else, Fading Afternoon is incredibly charming.

I was regularly surprised by some of the features and small details, things like collections and needing to buy more cigarettes' after running out made it all the more important to better understand and memorize the map. I also think that the limited ability of healing also makes each encounter one that really requires some careful thought on when to fight and how to approach combat, just running in recklessly is not really going to work out. I think that overall if you are a fan of the side scrolling genre and Yakuza Films this game is very solid and presents itself as an excellent way to spend your Fading Afternoons.

A great indie game with many alternatives paths to dive in. I often found myself thinking about the possibilities. Its replayability is ok. Despite not experiencing some "missions" or possibilities, I still spent 40 hours on a game that ends within 2 hours. However, this game is not just about its alternative paths and fun beatem up system which can be repetitive so I suggest you to play the game in easy mode in order to replay again and again. The player needs to think how should the character spend the day as fruitful as possible. The time passes and it passes fast. Further in game the character is more successful but also closer to the inevitable end. this fact struct me later on playing. And after many fights with mafia, I found myself in forest with fishing friends, or drinking...

I appreciate Yeo for being willing to put himself out there, put the art ahead of the commercial best practices, and craft something that is eccentric, nuanced, and even profound. Fading Afternoon isn’t an “entertaining” game in the traditional sense, but it’s a powerful one that will leave you reflective and pensive by the time you put it down. The games industry needs more people like Yeo.

An aloof Yakuza-sim that rewards those that stick around and pry, Fading Afternoon isn’t without some problems porting over to Switch, namely controls. However, it’s a minor issue in what is an overall unique and inspiring game that’s cinematic and moving if you embrace it.

Like a veteran yakuza lieutenant, Fading Afternoon can be unapproachable, offering little assistance for new recruits. This approach can be daunting at first, but it’s undoubtedly premeditated, encouraging you to explore the game’s intricately crafted world. There might not be many visible character stats, but this is accomplished role-playing.

Yeo created a beautiful and meaningful game in Fading Afternoon. It’s an interesting experience, and it can feel different from one run to another depending on your decisions. The problem is that some decision directions get in the way of it all, making it occasionally uncomfortable or inconvenient. Still, I’d say it is worth the trouble.

This video game generation has been a renaissance for “Beat ‘em up” games. There have been incredible releases like: Streets of Rage 4, Shredder’s Revenge, and now Fading Afternoon. Fading Afternoon is an indie game made by Yeo who also brought you Friends of Ringo Ishikawa and Arrest of a Stone Buddha. Fading Afternoon is a beat em up with heart. Everything you do in the game has an effect on the overall story. The game begins with Seigi Maruyama getting released from prison. You take a trip back to your old Yakuza boss and the game gives you control after that. You get set up with a hotel room and some cash to start out with. The first night you wake up coughing up blood to let you know that Seigi doesn’t have much time left. Your life bar lets you know that as well since every thing you do, be it getting hit in the head with glass bottles or staying out drinking and smoking til you pass out will effect your life meter. It will get lower and lower as the time passes and eventually your credits will come. The time passes as a day and night cycle with each “day” representing a week. What you do with the time you have is what’s important. You can traverse the city by way of train and there are different dots that represent different locations controlled by different Yakuza families. You can engage these families in battle at any time. Engaging with them creates warzones that are indicated by a red circle around the dot representing the area. This is where a little strategy comes into play because you will have to defend any area with the red circle around it and if you end up failing and running out of red circles, you will get shot on the train and that is the end. If you die in this game there is no continuing, no reload save, nothing. You have to start all over again at the beginning so be careful what you do. At least on your next playthrough they let you skip the beginning week so you don’t have to read all the dialogue again. There are other activities that you can participate in aside from the regular gang beating activities and story elements that can come from these. For instance, I was going to a Hostess Club on the regular and eventually ran into the main characters ex wife working there and she broke a glass bottle over my head. This is just one small example of the various things you can find in the world of Fading Afternoon. I found myself thinking a lot about this game’s options and all the different ways the story can go. I can see myself playing it multiple times to try to find all the different endings and story parts. It’s impossible for you to get everything in the first run so there is a lot of replay value in this one. If you like your beat ‘em ups with more heart and thought involved, pick up this game now!

SummarySeiji Maruyama is a middle-aged yakuza recently released from prison. Known as "Gozuki" (one of the demon generals from Buddhist mythology) he is the power that his oyabun counts on. But there is one thing his aniki is not taking into account: Maruyama is getting old.
