The most engaging GameCube title for the platform to date.

It's one of the most sinister, creepy, literary, and memorable horror games of all time. A classic, even as it lurks in larger games' shadows.

You should buy this game because it's frightening in a way that few games ever have been, and because it's a vividly explored, engrossing narrative the likes of which few out-and-out storytellers like "Final Fantasy" can compete with.

It's all good with the 0-10 score, but it's not accurate to describe complex endeavors. To that, a 0-100 score seems much more ideally. If it came to that I'll give ED a 92-94 rating, providing the proper historical placement of the time it got released. Introducing a few mechanics later embraced by the industry (sanity of course the most obviously remarkable) the experience is still surprisingly satisfying to this day! In a horror genre there's usually shooting, or meele combat, or no combat at all. This game pulls not only decent melee combat and shoote, but adds the awesome magicka mechanic, wich adds a complexity and strategic planning to the combat. Narrative wise, for me it's competent, well handled given the broad approach it requires to have some of Lovecraft lore involved, and delivers. And to top that, has a very rewarding re playable cicle!! In 2002, was a masterpiece. Today may have dropped a tiny step down. Meaning today it's and EXCELLENT game, and a wonderfully build horror experience...

The only shame i can get with this game is it being an gamecube exclusive. Its a MUST PLAY, amazing mechanics and unique ones at that.

I gave up with this one. Start up interesting but became a huge chore. The UI is very confusing and the spell system is a mess. I just got tired of trying. Is just stupid to make a game where you don’t know what’s next. Specially the spells situation. Also combat is clunky. I thought I would enjoy this game because it’s’ story but it turns out sourly boring and tedious. Not coming back ever. There are lots of better games than this one.

The sound is incredible, though. With some of the best music I've ever heard in a videogame, the game is haunting and chilling in all the right places.

All of this delightful action and horror comes wrapped in a bone-chilling soundtrack with enough chanting and "what the hell was that?" sound effects to sen dyou running for the light switch. [Aug 2002, p.62]

An amazing achievement...a truly intelligent psychological thriller, complete with balanced gameplay and plenty of surprises you'll never forget.

You're not going to find anything like it that outclasses it at all, it's incredible.

It gets a solid four stars, but still is far from perfect.

The enemies are repetitive, the puzzles are simple, and players aren't given much freedom to explore, but what is here is fun to play -- thanks to an interesting story, excellent sound effects, and well-animated visuals.

The incomparable Eternal Darkness. Great game, time travel, eternal struggle between good and evil, surreal atmosphere . Welcome to the immortal adventure.

Kind of a weird game, the setting is bizarre, the storyline barely makes sense, the action is mediocre. Not sure why so many people like this but I will say its not a bad game, just not great either.

Hard to believe those favorable reviews you find about this game. First of all, this is not a survival horror game, not even a horror adventure. Just a combat focused action adventure settled in a lovecraft inspired world. The game looks quite nice and is well narrated, mostly in cutscenes, yet playing the game gets very quickly very boring. To decribe it in one word: repetitive. The levels are very linear, the combat is always the same and the game recycles its environments and mechanics heavily. You even have to do 3 complete playthroughs to get the real ending. So to see it you have to invest about 25 to 30 hours but you get only around 3 hours of unique gameplay. If you cannot resist to try the game yourself, do not fall for the good reviews and stop playing after it gets boring for the first time, probably the second time you visit the church. By the way, the highly praised sanity meter is just a second health bar, kind of like the panic meter in clock tower 3. Get ready to refill it over and over again with the same spell or same finishing move.

I liked the part where they played Kiss me by Sixpence None the Richer although if Im being honest that was all my doing (Ill let it count though). Not sure why the roman soldier showed up, honestly not sure about a lot. I feel bad for that guy on the gamefaqs forum that couldnt get out of the prolog when I managed to do it while extremely drunk (like my man, just input 3:33 in the clock they literally tell you. Maybe time to call up the retirement gome. RING RING.
SummaryThis horror story spans generations, so you must relive the blood-soaked history while conjuring spells, solving puzzles, and slaying supernatural beasts. Whether you're creeping around as the Roman Centurion, Cambodian villager, or any of the other characters, the psychological thriller will challenge you to use your mind as well as you... Read More
