Poor performance mars what is otherwise a stellar Disgaea experience with some fantastic new 3D visuals. The new modes and features of Disgaea 6: Defiance of Justice paired with a nice new story and interesting characters puts this high on the SRPG recommendations for all fans of the genre; a great addition to the series and a decent Nintendo Switch implementation of the game.

Defiance of Destiny takes Disgaea's core and tries to evolve it into a game that exploits ridiculous characters and situations. However, already in its sixth installment, it does not find a balance between pleasing its fans and inviting new users, delivering a game that makes us doubt the longevity of the franchise.

Disgaea 6 can’t deny its blood ties to the previous games of the series, but it introduces fully 3D graphics and significantly cranks up the level of absurdity. The price for the former is poor framerate on Switch and the story will give you a lot of reasons to smile but won’t leave a lasting trace in your mind. Combat on the other hand is very solid and discovering new abilities and developing your party of characters are strong incentives to keep playing. [09/2021, p.35]

I'm a long time fan of the Disgaea series and started out with Hour of Darkness on PS2. I mention this not to show that I'm old but to provide context for my point of view. I honestly don't know where to begin here. The game feels... cheap in every aspect. Even when it's playing itself it feels like a chore to play, rather than the joy the other games were. Let's start with the characters. I fell in love with Laharl and his ragtag crew. I was intrigued by the plight of Adell. I never really did sympathize with Mao but he had his whole made scientist thing going on and the game really sold it. Valvatorez... ehh... a sardine-loving vampire sounds a bit fishy to me -pun intended- but I at least liked his character model... you might notice a pattern here. With Zed, it just took a nose dive. I don't care about him, his story or his plight and I don't find him or his allies the least bit interesting. I'm also scratching my head as to why my favorite -and for melee, go-to- monster was removed. There are no Nekomatas. Why? The quality of the stories has been going downhill (in my opinion) with every iteration but the issue here isn't with the story, its the characters who inhabit it. Once again, I really don't care, so I don't care what happens to them. But with every new iteration they just follow in their own image of Laharl's footsteps. The details may change, but it's the same bloody story I've played through five times before when I actually cared about the characters. That wouldn't be such problem if the game wasn't such a chore to play and the available mechanics hadn't been lobotomized. While the stories may have been rehashed and re-wallpapered, Disgaea was amazing for how it continually increased the complexity of what you could do and how you could power up your characters. It started up with the item world... basically random dungeons in your items that you could beat to power the item up. Since then there have been board games, dungeons in characters as well, pirates, reverse pirates, Disgaea 5 felt positively PACKED with stuff to do. Not so with 6. It's got the item world and exploration (where you can send some of your followers off to 'explore' and collect stuff) and that's more or less it. I'm simplifying a bit but what I'm trying to get across is how barren it feels in comparison with previous games that were progressively more complex and interesting. But what about when you are exploring those item world dungeons? Why, just press start and the characters will do all the work themselves. If you press the '-' button, you'll only have to check back at the -also amazingly barren, in all senses of the word- innocent town. This time, there will only EVER be three characters: a shop, a healer and a guide to send you to the next level or home. NOTHING else. It's almost criminal in comparison to previous iterations. It's a disgrace. Using the 'auto battle' feature spares you the tedium of bothering with the tactics of setting up your characters and their actions and I often found that they used their least efficient attacks. Characters that could have one-shotted enemies with their basic attack would instead constantly use skills that would only shave away a sliver of health instead. But that's okay because they were almost never in any danger. Even as ineffective as they were, they were often like invincible tanks, soaking up damage that they couldn't dish out in return (without manual control) with ease. So... just don't use the auto function? Well, that helps... but even then the game feels like a pale copy of it's predecessors. There was once a time when it would have been a major accomplishment and would have taken hours upon hours upon hours of dedicated work to get a character to level 9999 to reincarnate them. It's a major accomplishment. Sure you can set things up where it's easy... but that takes a lot of work collecting the right equipment and innocents before you can make the attempt. Last night, I leveled the better part of a dozen characters to 9999, reincarnated them and... in some cases, reincarnated them at 9999 TWICE. It felt like I accomplished nothing. I could go on, but frankly I'm so disgusted I don't want to bother. The thought that I'd ever consider a Disgaea game less than an 8 is appalling... but here it is. If you've never played a Disgaea game before and don't know what you're messing, maybe add a point. And then track yourself down a copy of Hour or Afternoon of Darkness and see how Disgaea was done RIGHT. The graphics are nothing special, the gameplay is worse than disappointing, the characters are imminently forgettable. It's like a classic remade for the fabled 'modern audience.' It falls short in every conceivable way. That's not to say it doesn't have some good ideas. But there's so much bad I literally ran out of space even if I'd wanted to continue. Seriously. I've only got seven characters left here.

**TL;DR:** Could graphic/performance be better? Yes. Is it different that other Disgaea games? Yes. Will it enrage core fans? For sure! Is it fun game when you get used to totally different approach than usual? Yes, yes and one more time Yes!!!
I bounced from this game 2 or 3 times but when I finally gave it a real chance, I was surprised how great it is! I get it why this game is rated so low. It has its problems: e.g. on Switch Performance could be better, and I am not really a fan of this new 3D approach but other than that I had really good time.
Story like every Disgaea: not a masterpiece but captivating enough.
Little bit of humor, plot-twist or two, serious topic in the background. Main characters are hit-and-miss, some of them I liked and for other I couldn't care less but main duo: Zed and Cerberus are right now my favorite protagonists in the entire series.
And now Elephant in the room: simplification and auto-battle.
Game is simplified: lost some of features and mechanics, focus on equipment is reduced (thus Item World as well), all deployed characters share exp, levels generally can be passed by game itself i auto-battle, and everything is inflated: stats, levels, hp. etc. But on the other hand it works great with whole concept, where main protagonist already reincarnated thousands of times and is already a though guy. Idea is that he need to fight strongest god of destruction ever thus getting a better equipment or even reaching level 9999 is not enough. And you need to reincarnate more and more to surpass these limitations making this game more a "Disgaea Manager 2021" rather than core Turn Based RPG experience.
You plan which of your team members to use , you plan which evilities to buy, which will help them to get more stats and karma points, you reach crazy levels on auto-battle and then reincarnate which will re-start your character to level 1 but will allow to reach new peaks. This mechanic is nothing new in Disgaea but never was a intended as main mechanic for main story. And it is in Disgaea 6 where even at the end of every chapter we read: "The Wheels of reincarnation never stop, and thus, a new story begins".
It is different than other Disgaea games, and I hope whole series will not head in that direction but having a little gem like Disgaea 6 is welcomed breath of fresh air.
Note: It is great on Switch, where you can play for a few minutes (or hours) and then leave it aside with auto-battle on. A little like Disgaea Tamagochi. But I can imagine that on other consoles or PC this mechanic might not work that great.

As an existing fan of Disgaea, this new one is, despite the incredible focus on big numbers, more of the same, and that is fine by me. The extended level cap is hugely indulgent and entirely unnecessary to the tactics JRPG format, but at the same time it's part of Disgaea's inherent self-awareness and genre-transgressive humour. It very much wants you to see it as a silly indulgence. Couple that with the genuinely funny, satirical script and the rich tactical core that, once you peel back the excess is as compelling as always, and Disgaea 6 shows that the developers at Nippon Ichi still know how to get a player both deeply invested and laughing along with the thing. I want to say that I don’t think there’s much more that can be done with Disgaea. To me it seems that the hyperbolic potential of the series must have peaked now. But then I thought that exact same thing after Disgaea 5 and this new entry has certainly corrected me on that count.

It’s easy to recommend Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny to series fans, especially if they plan on playing in handheld mode which alleviates most of the performance issues. Thanks to some efforts to streamline certain aspects of the game, and the new auto-battle mode, however, it also serves as a great entry point for those keen to find out what the fuss is all about. It may not have the best story in the series, and some gameplay changes might not seem so favourable, but overall Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny continues the series’ legacy of providing enjoyable strategy gameplay alongside plenty of laughs.

As a longtime fan of Disgaea games, I can definitively say this is one of my favorite entries in the series. I think the story is better than many of the previous games. While I was weary of the repetition of fighting the God of Destruction every chapter, there was actually a good amount of other bosses throughout the game, and there were great plot twists that kept me engaged with the story the whole way through. I was actually shocked a few times, but those moments didn't feel forced for shock factor, which is a plus. The voice acting is amazing, with each of the characters having distinct personalities that really bring this game to life. A lot of the changes made in this entry do a great job at streamlining the series, and I think anyone who was weary of the series will have a much easier time to jump in here than one of the other entries (I still think the others are definitely worth playing though). With auto battle and demonic intelligence, players who don't like grinding will be able to alleviate this and still enjoy a great game. I tested out these features and they worked well, but I personally enjoy the grinding, and I was able to make it through the main story without much use of these features, which is a plus for hardcore fans. The 3D models look very nice in my opinion, and convey the personality of the series well. There is a lot of complaints about performance in this entry, and while it is a bit rough in "Graphics" mode, the developers introduced two other settings ("Balanced" and "Performance"), so you can play in whichever mode you like. I personally recommend "Balanced" mode, as it looks pretty nice, and doesn't stutter at all. All in all, with more customization options than ever before in a Disgaea game, an exciting story with twists and turns, and a likable cast of characters brought to life by great voice acting, this is definitely a win for the series. I can't wait to see how Disgaea 7 turns out!

Disgaea 6 combines its typical SRPG charm with numerous simplifications for newcomers, which may make the game a little too fast.

Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny may not be the best game in the series, but the strategy gameplay is still amazing if you can handle the technical issues.

Disgaea 6 is a pretty good, if flawed, game that should hopefully be the stepping stone to better ones in the future.

Disgaea 6 makes a lot of changes, not all of which are for the best, leading to a somewhat unsatisfying experience. The autobattle system is useful in some aspects but could cheapen the experience for those who don’t restrain themselves. Parts of the campaign, like constantly having to fight the God of Destruction at the end of each chapter, got extraordinarily tiring. Due to streamlining, the systems in and outside of battle shouldn’t be hard to grasp for new players. Yet I feel a lot of returning players will find this entry inadequate and not just because of missing classes.

Disgaea 6 is the weakest entry in the series thanks to poor performance, bland combat, and a forgettable story.

I've played every game up until this one, NIS took a lot of risks with this one. In my opinion I like the direction they are taking which is the introduction of accessibility into the series. The writing is in my opinion the best since Disgaea 1, and I genuinely enjoy the dialogue and cutscenes that go on in between battles. I like the changes with weapons, it puts monsters and humans on a more even playing field, and with the exclusion of weapon skills humans arent immediately overpowered in everyway compared to monsters. Not sure why everyone is getting super butthurt by the graphics, maybe change the settings so it looks better to you. I think people freak out when things are changed, and in my opinion the game is changed compared to others, not worse. Give the game a few chapters before you immediately write it off because its different, I dont think this game deserves the level of hate its receiving.

A pretty decent installment in the series, I genuinely do like the automated options but it does feel slightly hard to categorise as a result, and I can see why some people loathe them. I love it for things like the Item World, but on the occasion where your AI can't complete a level it does raise questions about what it's for, and what the gameplay actually is. Likewise it's fantastic for level and resource grinding... but then why am I leaving my Switch on for hours at a time while I wait for things to finish off? There's more grinding than ever, therefore I'm interacting with it less than ever. It's difficult. I'd think I'd quite like to see a true idle game spinoff, just because I'd like to turn the switch off. Adding 3 extra 0's on to every number is quite a funny idea, and it probably intentionally messed up with the sense of progression so that new players weren't turned off by the usual level 1 plinking stage, but I found it offputting to start with and very distracting and hard to read throughout. The first third of the plot is just sequentially introducing each cast member through some of the worst and most repetitive dialogue, and at no point is anyone surprising enough or funny enough to justify that amount of work. It does warm up a bit to an okay Disgaea plot by the end, but it's so rough and lazy it's almost insulting. I don't get the vibe that this was just a bit of fun silliness, it felt churned out resentfully and I almost felt bad for being responsible for them having to keep making Disgaea. Everything about the main character's motive and "family relationship" felt alien, like it was a summary of something else that I was meant to have recognised. I'm sure it's a trope that some people just understand and engage with, and I'm glad some people are liking it. But it really annoyed me. And finally, I'd still be playing it but after about 50 hours it began freezing constantly and I went from genuinely not caring about the performance and visual options, to just deleting it. A huge shame really, though I am assured by the internet that this barely happens to anyone, so it's probably still worth getting. Perhaps don't buy the DLC before you reach the postgame though.

This isn't bad, a little lesser than previous games in the series, but still enjoyable. One thing I do miss is an opening theme song and video, my favorite being the one from Disgaea 3.

This is really juts a watered down version of Disgaea. It really feels like the game wants to be played like an idle game, where the game basically plays itself. It can be fun, but it also becomes boring pretty easy. The story also appears to be like a confusing mess. But by far the worst thing is the technical side. If you want to play with the "good" graphic settings, the game has such a poor framerate, the term slideshow is not an exaggeration. So you have the option to turn on the performance mode, but here the resolution of the game is so terrible that it's sometimes hard to make out any details. And the **** goodness, the controls. They are nothing but a clunky mess. What did I like about this game? Well, I really liked the characers and the interactions between them. Those can be really funny and the humor is great in general. And if this is your first Digaea, the game may not be that bad. But even then it's more mediocre.
